Recovery from Acronis True Image Home 2012 on Windows 10

Thread needs solution

Hi

Last week I did a back up with Acronis True Image Home 2012 on my Asus Zenbook that runs with Windows 7. In the meanwhil the harddisk and the mainboard of my Asus Zenbook broke. Today I've bougt another laptop and wanted to recover my system backup. When I tried to download Acronis True Image Home 2012 I was told that it wouldn't run on Windows 10.

How shall I recover now my backup on Windows 10?

Kind regards

Lukas, welcome to these user forums.

ATIH 2012 will not install on Windows 10 and is not supported to be used within the Windows 10 OS, but you can still use the ATIH 2012 bootable Rescue Media, and if you don't already have this created, you can download an .ISO (CD image) file from your Acronis account.

You face some further issues if you are wanting to restore your Windows 7 system backup from your Asus Zenbook to a new laptop that is running Windows 10, as you are restoring to different hardware which will require the use of Acronis Universal Restore to prepare the restored Windows 7 OS to work on the new hardware of the laptop.

Unfortunately this is potentially a lot more difficult to do successfully than just restoring the image back to the same system.

You need to ensure that both the old and new systems will boot in the same boot mode, i.e. if your ASUS Zenbook booted via UEFI and the new laptop does the same, that is good, but if one boots via Legacy/BIOS and the other by UEFI, then the UEFI would need to be changed to use Legacy boot, if it allows you to do so.

You also need to match the disk controller type between the old and new hardware, i.e. both using AHCI / SATA - some newer systems come configured to use RAID and that will cause problems.

Further, if you have an OEM version of Windows 7, i.e. one branded to Asus, then this is non-transferable to different hardware without the purchase of a new OS license and activation.
