Error cloning to SSD and computer not booting after creating bootable USB
Hi all,
I've been trying to clone my hard drive to a new Crucial SSD but have been having issues. Every time I try it terminates at a writing error, with the programme failing to write due to a problem with sector ########### on hard disk '2'. Am I right in thinking that this indicates a problem with my brand new SSD? I can't move past this stage.
Furthermore, in an attempt to work through this issue I created a bootable usb using the bootable media component of the software. The instructions for cloning my disk available on the Acronis website I was looking at suggested I should restart my machine and boot from the bootable usb. I have tried this, and even when running in this mode the same error occurs.
What's worse, now that I have created a bootable usb my machine can no-longer boot by itself. It seems that creating the media has affected my licenced windows software and is preventing normal startup. When I boot from the usb and I can see that all of my files are still safe and present on the machine in the True Image software, but an error instructing me to insert my windows disc or contact my product manufacturer displays otherwise. I have tried entering my BIOS setup and checked that the priortiy for running BIOS is set to hard drive.
Is there any way I can successfully clone my drive and is there any way I can get my windows up-and-running again?
Thank you for your help,
Roald

Steve,
Thank you for the quick help! I will have a look at your link now.
Only two: the existing drive and the SSD I'm trying to transfer to.
As for the BIOS issue I don't currently have the laptop available but will check in a few hours when I do and update.

Roald, if you are seeing sector write issues on a new SSD drive, then I would look at requesting a replacement drive as this is not a good place to start from.

Having just jumped on the machine, there is no Windows Boot Manager in the list.

I just saw your last message there sorry Steve, I will do if you think this is the case. I performed a chkdsk on my existing drive before this occurred, and found no issues with it.
Am I right in thinking that drive 2 is my SSD?

Roald, if you do not see Windows Boot Manager, then make sure that you have disconnected / removed all other devices such as your bootable USB drive and the new SSD, then check again in the BIOS settings that you are seeing the internal laptop drive and that this is in the list of boot devices.
What version of Windows are you running on the laptop?
Have you tried doing a full shutdown, remove all power and the laptop battery, then press & hold the laptop power button to ensure all power is drained, then replace the battery and try booting again.
If you still have a problem, check to see if you have an option in the BIOS settings to reset to optimal settings, normally found on the final page of the BIOS settings where you see the Save or Discard changes options.
