Backup keeps on growing in size
I have an incremental backup scheme where I have five incremental backups and then a full backup. Also, I keep only two backup chains. However, deletion appears not to be working as the space used just continues to grow.
In earlier versions of ATI, it was possible to get to a ‘timeline’ whereby it was possible to see just what was going on and delete backups, with associated increments. I cannot find this with ATI 20116 – is it still there?
Searching, I did come across an note from Grover that mentioned a link that showed how to delete backup chains; unfortunately this link was broken and so was not very helpful. I was also confused by something in the manual that talked about booting from the emergency disk and then deleting…but I have not tried this yet!
Any help would be appreciated!

In risposta a Alan, do you have Automatic… di truwrikodrorow…

Steve. Thanks for your comment (sorry for the delay but I did not get an expected email that someone had replied). Yes, I should have said, automatic cleanup is switched on which is why I am concerned.
However, I guess I could check 'delete backup chains older than 7 days but this could lose all backups if I am away for a week or more!
Maybe I just need to control it manually....!

Alan, no problem with the delay. The key to automatic cleanup is understanding that this only runs after a new Full backup image has been created.
If you use the option to delete backup chains older than 7 days, then that 7 days does not start counting until after the next Full backup image is created successfully, which is the part that gets users confused!
If you try to control this manually, then it is very important to run a Validation for your backup tasks after you have deleted any backup .TIB files from your storage drive - this is needed to reconcile the information about those backups which is held in the Acronis Database files, as otherwise you will get pop-up error messages about missing files!

Thanks again Steve. That is very helpful and I am now much clearer about the '7 days' business (actually the only really sensible option I guess!) but it led me astray too.
But is the 'timeline' aspect where all backups are put into a timeline for study and/or deletion still buried somewhere? In earlier versions of ATI I found it very useful on occasions; but I cannot find it now.

Alan, the 'timeline' in the later versions of ATIH is now found after you take one of the 'Recover' options for a backup task, i.e. Recover disks or Recover files. Once you click on one of these, then if you look to the top right corner you should then see a date/time box which you can select any of the available recovery points from. These correspond to the dates/times of your backup version chain files.
It is a lot different to the older versions which displayed a calendar type option but once you are used to it, this does work ok.

In risposta a Alan, the 'timeline' in the… di truwrikodrorow…

Steve; thanks again! I had seen this but had failed to realise that the screen could be expanded to give much the same information as did the timeline!
I am now happy to play and see what I have and what I could delete!
Thanks for all your help.
