Searching on wrong drive to restore backup

Thread needs solution

I am using 2017.

My backup is on a USB drive at F: In the upper left-hand corner, under "this computer",  it shows the backup at F. However, when I try to restore, it says that it cannot find the recovery files on D:

How do I get it to look at F for the recovery files?

Lawrence, sorry for not seeing your topic sooner to offer you a reply.

From the description that you have given, it soons likely that your backup drive letter has changed at some point in time, i.e. was previously on drive D:

If you are attempting to restore a backup from within Windows using ATI then this uses a database to reference information on where the backup files are / were stored.

To overcome this issue, you should do a validation for your backup task which will then try to find all the files for the backup and will throw up errors for any which cannot be found - you can then take the Ignore option for any files that were previously on drive D: or alternatively, you can use the browse option to select where the missing file can now be found on drive F:

Another alternative and recommended if doing any disk & partition restores, is to boot from the Acronis bootable Rescue media which doesn't use the database information but only looks at the drive you point it at for the backup files.

In addition to what Steve said, I would recommend this for future backups:

You should assign a fixed drive letter to your external drive, high in the alphabet (e.g. M) to avoid its letter changing.
Windows Disk Management | right-click the external drive | Change drive letters and paths.
