Acronis Media Builder failure

Thread needs solution

I've installed ATI 2018 on a "test" PC and decided to give some of the functions a test drive.  The first thing I tried was the Media Builder and ran into a problem: "Unable to create bootable media" when trying to create a bootable USB memory "drive".  I've run into this problem with some USB memory sticks.  I was told that the USB memory has to be reformatted with something that goes beyond the Windows reformatting utility.  RMPrepUSB was recommended.  (I think that recommendation may have been from an Acronis forum.)

However, ATI 2018 Active Protection is causing RMRPrepUSB from reformatting the drive.  It is giving "MBR was protected".   There is an Active Protection exclusion list, but I'm not sure what is supposed to be specified there.  Programs that are allowed to do potentially dangerous actions?  Targets that can have potentially dangerous actions done to them?  I'm sure I can just turn off Active Protection, but that hardly seems appropriate action needed to create a bootable recovery device.

Update:

Perhaps not a straightforward problem.  I took the USB drive to a PC running ATI 2017 and got the same failure (as expected) using the 2017 Media Builder.  RMPrepUSB reformatted the drive and the 2017 Media Builder could then create the medium.

But when I took the drive back to the PC running ATI 2018 I got the same failure.  Is there a log somewhere that indicates the problem?

By the way, that was using the Simple process.  I got the same failure when using the Advanced process to create either the WinRE medium (which I assume is the same as in the Simple process) or the WinPE medium (or whatever it is that uses the ADK).  I successfully created the Linux-based recovery medium using the Advanced option, but that isn't what I want.

Patrick,

I can help you with the RMPrepUSB problem. I use it and have it working with Active Protection. You need to add two programs to the Manage precesses list (RMPrepUSB.exe and RMPartUSB.exe). Both can be found at C:\Program Files (x86)\RMPrepUSB\.

You need to add programs that you trust to the Active Protect list if there is a problem with them. I have 7 programs in my list now.

Thanks.  I'll add those programs.  I gather that means the list is for "whitelisted" programs - programs that can make any changes they want.

Aha!  These programs are added via "Manage processes", not via "Manage Exclusions" under "Active Protection settings".  I bet I won't be the last to look for settings under "Settings".

Yes, they shifted it .... I have to rediscover how to do it each time. Not intuitive.
