New And Improved 2011 - You have got to be kidding!
First I have had many version of TI going back years. I have also used Ghost for even longer. One of my biggest complaints about TI is that the scheduler sucks compared to Ghost. I have spent hours working with support trying to setup a workable schedule that I need. Nothing hard:
1. take a full backup at hour zero
2. take an incremental each hour from that
3. save 7 days of incremental's
4. take another full backup at day 7
5. goto step 2 and repeat
6. after doing above for 3 weeks, on start of week 4, delete first weeks backups and incrementals
7. and so on, and so on.....
I could never get TI 2010 to do this and had to revert to Ghost and put away TI. Now I am having boot up issues with the Ghost Recovery Disk on my new computer, and I saw that Acronis release this weekend a new TI 2011 that had better UI, better backup scheduling, etc. I bit, and bought it hook, line and sinker. Installed it and yes it does have a nice UI, but the scheduler sucks, even worse that 2010! It looks like (from what I can see) that you have limited backup scheduling, you cannot change the default retention period from 6 months, the amount of storage needed to store backup is double (it takes a full, then takes another full, then does incremental).
Am I missing something here? I un-installed TI 2011, and had to go back to 2010. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Gary,
You can do what you want in ATIH2011 but there is an issue at the present time in that the released build does not count correctly it was reported in the Beta as case 94768.
When you create a task select the link under Backup Scheme then select Custom on the top pull down and incremental on the next, then select create full after "n" incrementals after that you can select the "Turn on automatic cleanup" and select the way you wish things to be managed.
You can then edit the schedule to take backup every so many hours.
But you will have to do some arithmetic to get somewhere near where you want to be.
However it will only do 3 incrementals (case number above) I believe at this time before creating a new full backup
Hope that helps

With build 5519 I selected (the default) version chain backup scheme and did a backup....
1. It firstly created a full image ... OK
2. The next backup....... created ANOTHER FULL image (Why)!!!!
3. The next one was a differential.......... but why TWO full backups at first????

Did you have it set to allow no more than 2 full backups or only one?

Where is that setting ;-)
I don't think there's an option for that with version chain...

Gary Sewell:
It seems to me that the schedule you want to accomplish extremely easy to if you also use helper program Chain2Gen.
Using chain2gen you can achieve the desired outcome with any version of acronis (v11, 2009, 2010, and 2011).
Chain2gen can be found in the stickies of this forum. [ http://forum.acronis.com/forum/5940 ]
The basic steps of what you need to do are:
step 1) download/install chain2gen.
step 2) define your chain2gen params
in your case you would have the 3 mandatory params and also use "trgr_on_day1"
Two of the mandatory params (one for device and the other for folder)
are unique to you as these are the name of the target backup device/folder you wish to hold your backup
the other two params you would need to user are:
set MAX_BACKUP_GENERATIONS=4
set TRGR_ON_DAY1=Sun
step 3) you need to define just one backup job within acroins.
* this backup job would call chain2gen as a pretask.
* the backup job itself would be an "incremental" job type.
* you would use the acronis scheduler to run this job once an hour
(in TI-2010 the schedule to do this is found on "daily" tab - this tab includes a check box to repeat the run every xx hours)
step 4) leave your computer on and go enjoy the remainder of your day.
from this moment forward
if a backup chain does not yet exist then a new full backup will occur,
after this every hour another incr will be tacked onto teh chain.
Every sunday the existing chain will be rotated into history and a new chain started.
C2G will maintain four versions of history for you with the oldest being deleted as needed.
Enjoy.

Hello Gary
Thanks RayG, you described correct solution. Gary, just set daily - every hour backup schedule and set custom backup scheme (see attach). There is one "but" about that, your computer must work every time, in other case you will not get your new Full backup at the 7th day.
Thanks

Just be aware that IF you edit the settings at all and save them then your automatic consolidation setting may be forgotten. I have recently found and reported this.
