Manually restoring files on Bitlocker system

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I have been trying to work out how I can restore my data from my old system onto my new system.

Old system: Windows 10 Pro - BIOS mode / not encrypted

New system: Windows 10 Pro - UEFI mode / Bitlocker

How do I get my data from Old system onto New system? Or is this too much to ask from this backup solution? If so, what would I need instead?

I know that it can backup/restore systems like the new system, but transferring seems impossible? Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Note: Old system's data is stored on my NAS but can be moved onto external disk if this increases performance.

On a related note, I tested Universal Restore and it took 35 minutes to get to my folder on my NAS! I have read others with similar issues. The restore process itself went fine though.

Rowena, welcome to these User Forums.

Please can you expand on exactly what data you are wanting to transfer here from your old system to your new one?

Where is the data stored to be transferred, what volume of data is involved etc?

There are a number of different scenarios that are possible with your question here:

One would be to migrate your old Windows 10 Pro OS and all installed applications and data by backing up the entire disk & partitions where this is stored to an external HDD drive, then restore this to the new computer, followed by using the Acronis Universal Restore tool to prepare that restored OS to work on the new hardware involved.  This is not a trivial operation to perform.

Another option would be to keep the new working Windows 10 Pro system as it is, reinstall any applications that you want to use on this system, then transfer your user data (documents, photos, music etc) by doing a files & folders backup from the old system and restoring this to the new one. This is very much the easier option and does not require Universal Restore, plus can be done from the Windows ATI application GUI and without the need to touch your BitLocker configuration (assuming that BitLocker is unlocked when Windows is active and thus transparent to ATI).

Please note: that ATI cannot be used to transfer or migrate installed applications between computer systems.  See KB 19296: Acronis products cannot be used to transfer applications to different system or upgrade OS

Thank you, I don't mind installing everything manually.

I have not seen the option to restore on my new system, only the option to create a new backup (which I didn't want to do, as I want to restore my backed up data). The restore option simply does not present itself after installing ATI.

Rowena, you will only see a restore / recovery option after you have created a backup first - in your case, you would need to have created an Acronis backup of your old system then use the option in ATI 2018 to Add existing backup which is found to the right of the option to Add a new backup.

If your existing backup is on your NAS, then you would need to use the browse panel shown to navigate to where the NAS can be shown, enter your NAS credentials then navigate on the NAS to where your existing backup image file is located and select this to be Added to the GUI.

Once you have the backup added, then you can click on the Recovery button to see the content of the image and to select what you want to recover.

Note: when recovering your user data, do not take the option to recover with the original file security settings because this will cause you problems accessing the data on the new computer, regardless of having a user with the same name!

See the screen shots below to illustrate the above advice.

Thank you! I had overlooked that option at the bottom.

I'm going to give that a go.
