Recovery from External USB Drive Fails

Thread needs solution

I am using ATI 2018.  I have a backup stored on an external USB drive.

If I recover the files to the same external USB drive, the recovery works.  But, if I try to recover to a different USB drive, the recovery fails.  I understand that I could just copy (or cut) and paste the recovered files from one drive to the other, but I am wondering if there is something that I should know about how ATI works regarding recovery from one USB drive to another.

Bruce, what messages are given in the recovery task log for when you get the failure?
What type of backup image is involved here?
Is this a Disk & Partitions or a Files & Folders backup?
How exactly are the USB drives connected, i.e. directly to USB ports in the computer, via a USB hub, using a USB dock?
What type of USB drives / ports involved? All USB 3.0 or 2.0 or mix of both etc?

If you don't already have it, please download a copy of the MVP Log Viewer tool from the Community Tools link in my signature for viewing the log files (assuming all the above is being done from within Windows, not via bootable rescue media).

Hi Steve:

Thanks for the quick response !  Here are the details:

What type of backup image is involved here?  Backup of Files and Folders using Differential Method.  It's the first iteration of the backup.

Is this a Disk & Partitions or a Files & Folders backup?  Files and Folders.

How exactly are the USB drives connected:  I am using a Dell XPS 13 9360 Laptop, with both external drives connected directly to USB ports in the computer.

What type of USB drives / ports involved? Source drive is USB 3.0 Seagate Expansion Portable drive connected to USB 3.0 port.  Destination drive is WD Mybook USB 3.0 connected to USB 3.0 port.

When restoring to the source drive the recovery is successful.

When trying to recover to the WD Mybook, this is the Log report:

Thanks !

Bruce, thanks for providing the extra information for this issue.

How is your WD MyBook formatted and is this using the same formatting as your Seagate drive, i.e. are both using NTFS here?

What options are you using for the Recovery?  Are you recovering files/folders with their original permissions, owner etc?

My reason for asking the above is that the log looks to be showing a hardware issue with the WD drive as per entries:

Failed to recover file or folder 'Desktop Discard'.
Error occurred while recovering. (0x4001A)  function = "CreateDirectoryW",
..
The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error (0xFFF0)  code = 800701E3)

It is possible that if the WD drive is not using the same format as the source drive where the backup was created from, that there may be file/folder attributes that the WD drive does not support that contribute to the errors being reported?

I would recommend running CHKDSK /F against the WD drive and consider visiting the WD support website and downloading their diagnostic tools to test the whole drive & components.

Hi Steve:

Thanks for the info.  I'm on the road right now and don't have my drives with me, except for the Seagate Portable Expansion (which is NTFS).

I think that the WD Mybook should be NTFS (that's generally the default, I think).  But, I'll check when I get home and also run chckdsk and other utilities.  I didn't change any defaults on the recovery, so the permissions, owner settings would be the default settings.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but the Seagate Portable Expansion doesn't have external power, but the WD Mybook does.

Thanks again for your help - I'll follow up next week.

Cheers,

Bruce

Hi Steve:

I've confirmed that the WD Mybook is formatted for NTFS and I ran CHKDSK and did not identify any errors.

I have another question on recovery procedures.  I would like to replicate the file structure from my original drive (E:/) on a new destination drive (H:/).  When I check the "Keep original file structure" option, the recovery destination box looks like this:

    H:\E:/Data/

Which doesn't work.  How to I recover to a destination named H:/Data ?

Cheers,

Bruce

Hi Bruce, the following is from the ATI 2018 User Guide: Recovering files and folders section.

Select a destination on your computer to where you want to recover selected files/folders. You can recover data to its original location or choose a new one, if necessary. To choose a new location, click the Browse button.

When you choose a new location, the selected items will be recovered by default without recovering the original, absolute path. You may also wish to recover the items with their entire folder hierarchy. In this case select the Keep the original folder structure check box.

In your case you should not be using the Keep the original folder structure option as you do not want to recover the original, absolute path, as this will try to create the whole path as it was on the E: drive, hence including E:\ in the path.

Thanks Steve:

I get it now.  I made the mistake of recovering with Keep the original folder structure checked and the files recovered to:

  H:/Drive(E:)/Data

So, I will just move them to:

  H:/Data

I haven't been able to figure out why I was unable to recover from my Seagate Portable Expansion to a WD Mybook.  But, I have successfully recovered everything to a new internal hard drive.  So, I will work with that instead.

Cheers,

Bruce

Bruce, glad you have got this figured out now and are able to move the data to where you need it to be.
