Recommendations For Using Online Backup
Hey guys,
Hope some of you can point me in the right direction on this.
Just had my C drive go pop, and spent the best part of the last 2 weeks purchasing, rebuilding, and trying to restore from system restore points and images....
Now, with the wonders of Acronis TI 2011, Plus Pack, and Online Backup, I'm hoping to avoid this headache in the future.
MY SITUATION IS:
I have an 80Gb SSD C: drive for Windows.
I have a 300Gb Raptor for Programs.
(other drives for file and media storage, but I'm happy with my local backups for them and they'd go over the 250Gb anyway)
My Acronis backup images (.tib files) - of C is 22 Gb, and the Raptor is 91Gb.
Are these .tib files the best files to backup with Online Backup? I have compression set to maximum in Acronis TI for these backups, so thought that would be the best way to upload them.
Unfortunately it's saying 12 days and 12 hours to complete the online backup, and I don't know if my PC will actually stay on that long. Sometimes Windows seems to force a shutdown with Windows Update. Worryingly, it's been saying 12 days and 12 hours since it started. Monitoring my upload bandwidth it is mostly running around 800 Kbps.
If I just selected the files I wanted to Online Backup on my C and Raptor drives, does Online Backup compress them before uploading? Otherwise I'll run out of 250Gb pretty quick I think.
Thanks in advance for any help,
D

Hi bin -
Thanks for your response there.
I did give up with trying to back up entire tib images - it ran for 3 days and just reset to saying that 1Mb (yes, 1Mb) had been uploaded in Online Backup.
So 2 days ago I changed the settings to just upload all folders on my C and R drives (and de-selected the Recycle Bins on both).
So far Online Backup is reporting 6911 Mb stored, with roughly 243 Gb left.
Looks like it's working - many Gigs to backup so will be a week or two till it completes the first one.
I don't suppose this will then work as an off-site system image store? If I'm storing the whole of my C and R drives (C=windows, R=programs), then how much use is this if my C drive goes pop, and my local system image is unusable? Can I restore the whole OS on C just with this online backup?
Thanks again!
Darren

Hi Darren, you are correct. The on line backup is not intended as a disk or partition image store, just files and folders. Even with Windows and some software there are files on a system partition or within some system folders that could be usefully saved but not as an effort so that you could do a full system restore.

Thanks bin,
Will carry on with the existing backup then - it's up to 16Gb today, so shouldn't take more than a week or two, then hey presto - it's just changed files that get uploaded from what I gather after that so should be pretty zippy.
Cheers, Darren.

I seem to be regularly getting this error also when doing an online backup.
There is no Event code to search the knowledge base or give to support though....
"More information about this error and applicable solution may be available online in the Acronis KNowledge base.
To access the online resource manually enter the event code at:
http://kb.acronis.com/errorcode
Event code:
"
So not really sure why it's bailing out...
Any ideas?
Thanks, Darren.
