WinPE with True Image and TrueCrypt plugins

Thread needs solution

Hi!

After upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7, I also purchased True Image Home 2010. Before, I was using True Image 11 with great success on a fully TrueCrypt 6.2a encrypted machine. I am reading the forums for quite a time but am still uncertain if what I intend to do is possible with True Image Home 2010. This is what I need:

1. I make backups on a regular basis from within running Windows, i.e. I login via TrueCrypt boot screen with the passphrase, Windows starts normally and I run the installed True Image program to make the backup while working normally with the system.

2. The backup will be stored on an external TrueCrypt encrypted drive.

This way, it will be possible to do a file system based backup rather than a sector-by-sector backup because True Image does not see the encryption but can access the unencrypted data. The backup itself is secure because it is located on an encrypted drive. And I can access the backup as long as Windows starts because I have TrueCrypt and True Image installed, can mount the backup drive and restore the files I need.

In cases where Windows does not boot (which happened to me some times), I have a BartPE environment available with TrueCrypt and True Image plugins. I can boot BartPE, mount the system drive with TrueCrypt w/o pre-boot authentication (i.e. making it available under BartPE), mount the backup drives using TrueCrypt, and run True Image to do what is necessary.

The TrueImage plugin for version 11 has been available free of charge. What I need is the same thing for version 2010. If I am going to create a WinPE environment based on Windows 7, can there such a plugin be integrated? Does the TrueImage Plus Pack do the trick? I would purchase it but I am not willing to pay money for it if I have to find out that it will not do what I need.

Any comments would be much appreciated! Please don't suggest to do my backups on a sector-by-sector base because that would plainly be two large steps backwards to what I could do before.

From what I understand, the PlusPack does include a way to create a Windows 7 PE environment with a TI 2010 plugin. See this article: http://kb.acronis.com/content/5415. Whether you can also install a TrueCrypt plugin to WinPE 7 is another question.

However, just because you are running Windows 7 does not mean that you have to use a Windows 7 PE boot environment; you could still use an XP-based recovery environment like BartPE. The BartPE plugin for TI2010 is supposed to be an optional download that you can get to by logging into your account on the Acronis web site. After downloading you could incorporate this into a BartPE build along with your TrueCrypt plugin.

If you need to create the build on an XP machine you can always install VirtualPC 2007 (or, VirtualXP if you have the appropriate version of W7) and do the build on the VM.

Hi!

Thanks for your reply! A BartPE plugin for TI2010 was exactly what I was looking for, but so far I didn't find it. I will give it a try!

Edit: I was not aware that I had to register the 2010 upgrade as well. I just did it and can now see the 2010 BartPE plugin ;)

Thanks

I have TI2009, latest Build, runing on Win7*64 . I downloaded the Bart PE & Safe mode add ons and ran same. It seemed to run in the background, nothing on screen apart from the permission box but I can't find a Cab File for Bart PE anywhere. Only 2 folders with the file sets, not compressed, in the 86*Program folder. Anyone Know where the lost cab file is ?
NO instructions on the site all. ETDB is free and has A cab file download that goes straight into The Bart PE Builder and runs with no problems at all and they have full instructions onsite ! !
