How to disable auto-conversion of the disk partition style from MBR to GPT

Thread needs solution

I wish to use TI 2018 to clone HDD to SSD for use on older, BIOS-based, MBR systems but make use of a fast UEFI-based PC to speed up the direct-clone operation. Unfortunately, the last step of the Clone process shows a message similar to "Converting to GPT to enable booting". TI 2018 is being too clever. The target SSD has to be MBR to allow it to boot when the disk is moved into the older PC. Can I suppress this unwanted feature?

(See related post https://forum.acronis.com/forum/acronis-true-image-home-forum-older-ver… but that relates to using whole-disk Backup as an intermediary step, rather than direct Clone.)

Yes you can. You just need to boot the recovery media in Legacy mode instead of UEFI mode. TI converts the target to match what it thinks is needed based on how it's booted.

Thanks, Mustang. I wasn't expecting to need to boot Recovery Media. When doing the clone I chose option 'Copy partitions without changes', expecting this to keep the MBR style for the target disk, but it didn't do so. Looks as though I'll have to do the slower Backup/Restore separately. Is this correct?

If you choose to use the Manual method when Cloning, then there are further options provided which will allow you to keep your disks in MBR partition format.

See the ATI 2018 User Guide:  Clone disk wizard

Manual—Manual mode will provide more data transfer flexibility. Manual mode can be useful if you need to change the disk partition layout.

[This step is only available in the manual cloning mode]. On the Change disk layout step, you can edit settings of the partitions that will be created on the destination disk. Refer to Manual partitioning for details.

Specify the following settings for the partition:

  • Size and position
  • File system
  • Partition type (available only for MBR disks)
  • Partition letter and label

Refer to Partition settings for details.
