Always suffer failures on files and folders with backips

Thread needs solution

I use Acronis True Image 10 Home (build 4942) and have always had the same issue when performing an initial data backup. My system runs Windows XP SP3 with all hotfixes and the destination drive is a USB2 attached Western Digital External HDD.

The issue is that every time I try a clean, full backup of all of My Pictures and My Music I always receive a number of error prompts notifying of a failure to back up a file or folder offering me the option to retry (which is always unsuccessful), ignore or cancel. It always fails on My Pictures and never on My Music. The My Pictures folder is 50GB is size but made up of an organised file structure.

An example of the specific error is:

Error on Backup Operation
E00040001: Failed to backup file or folder: 'C:\Documents and Settings\xxxx\My Documents\My Pictures\xxxx\xxxx'
Error reading the file. (0x40001)
Tag = 0x61F1883FE50B0A2F
(0x1003EB)
Tag = 0x14181C22EF45AC01

The final backup reported that the operation was successful but only totalled 25GB, far short of the expected total size of 66GB.

Any advice on why this may be happening and what could be done to remedy it would be gratefully received as at the moment I seem to be unable to backup my critical data.

Regards.

Personally, I would not use True Image for backing up data files like photos and music. Many of the regulars here prefer, as I do, to use something like Karen's Replicator or Microsoft's Sync Toy. Both of these backup data files/folders in their native format. And once the initial backup is made, the software will backup only changed or new files so this is done very quickly.

Just a few days ago someone reported that he lost years of photos because the True Image backup of the photos messed up somehow when he tried to restore them.
