Trying to Decide on Upgrading to 2019, but Cannot Figure Out How to Include Files from My Mobile Device

Thread needs solution

Hello Acronis Community 04/19/2019,

I have been using Acronis True Image PC since at least 2012. I am now using True Image 2018. I have set up backups for two mobile devices, but there doesn't seem to be any way to backup files that are not contacts, pictures, videos or calendars.

How do I back up other files from my mobile devices?

Does True Image 2019 backup these other mobile device files?

Gary, welcome to these public User Forums.

Sorry but the Acronis Mobile Backup feature is restricted to just the items you mention - this is mainly because it does not have root access to the mobile OS.

This is unchanged with ATI 2019.

Hi Steve Smith,

THANKS for the reply.

Too bad ATI has such poor support for mobile backups. I was shocked to find that I could not specify files & dirs for backup inclusion. I am truly disappointed.

It seems to me that this lack of mobile file support is a product-killer for Acronis. I do not understand why ATI needs root access to the OS just to backup files.

I would be HAPPY to purchase Acronis licenses for all my mobile devices if ATI did complete backups as specified by me.

Regardless, at least now I know that I can remove the mobile apps from my devices and start my search for an application that does what I need it to do.

THANKS AGAIN for the info, Steve.

Unfortunately, it's because without an unlocked or rooted bootloader, they are inaccessible. That's why iTunes has the market on iOS backups and Android really doesn't have anything great at all, outside of Google. There are some 3rd party apps for specific Android devices (like Samsung Kies, but they don't backup everything either. And of course, no respectable business is going to support the rooting or jailbreaking or devices, although if you're will be ng to take the risk, they do have apps in the App stores.

Here is the Acronis mobile support info from the user guide

I use an Android device (Google Pixel 2) and find it very easy to copy files to/from the device and my PC. Although it's not a backup program that checks for changes, moving/copying files is not a difficult process at all. I can access just about everything on the phone... which means I need to be careful, of course.

Bruno, that is a good thought.  I can explore the contents of my own Samsung Galaxy Android phone on my PC simply by connecting the two via a USB cable.

The phone shows in Explorer under My PC albeit there is no actual drive letter assigned, but once you can see the phone contents, then it should be possible to use standard Copy & Paste commands to make a copy of all / any of the contents to a PC folder, which could then be the Source for an ATI Files & Folders backup task, so getting a much more complete backup of the phone data than can be done via using the Mobile backup feature.

FYI, I use both Asus File Manager and Amaze File Manager... both good apps. With Asus File Manager, I can move files back and forth between the phone and PC using my wireless network.

Hello All,

THANKS to everyone who has provided information on this subject!

Bobbo_3C0X1, on the aspect of not having Android root access, you said "Unfortunately, it's because without an unlocked or rooted bootloader, they are inaccessible. That's why iTunes has the market on iOS backups and Android really doesn't have anything great at all, outside of Google."

What are you eluding to when you say "outside of Google"? Are you implying that Google already has backups of my files stored somewhere? Are you saying that Google could fix this issue with an Android Update of some kind?

BrunoC, THANKS for your comment about manually transferring files from mobile devices to PCs.

Steve Smith, THANKS for your suggestion about connecting the mobile device to the PC using a USB cable. This has worked for me and I have successfully copied a file I consider critical to my PC. However, this is not even close to being a complete solution.

However, I am currently having an issue with Windows 10 (see Acronis Support case ID 03729942)  that is preventing my PC Backups from completing. All Acronis has said on this topic is that I should upgrade to ATI 2019. A typical response for a business entity, but they really haven't said the upgrade would fix the problem.

Gary, we do not have any access to Acronis Support cases (other than any we raise ourselves), as we are just users like yourself, not employees of Acronis.

With regard to your issue with Windows 10, then I would suggest taking a 30-day trial copy of ATI 2019 and testing if your issue is resolved or not.  Acronis, like many other companies, focus their development resources on the current and future versions of their products, rather than trying to fix any issues in older products, so even if they do identify a software defect / bug in an older product they will recommend upgrading to the latest product, especially if that defect is know to have been fixed in that version.

Gary, the "default" backup for Android is Google Sync if enabled. Under Settings, accounts, your Gmail account, sync.

There it can backup just about everything on your phone. It's still not a full device backup but it gets most of the critical stuff, plus pics, vids, etc.

Otherwise, check your manufacturer to see if they have a specific tool. Samsung Kies is probably one of the best. One plus has a backup and migration tool and I'm sure others do too. For me, Google Sync takes care of most of it.
