How reliable a backup to the cloud is?

Thread solved

If I’ve understood correctly, a backup to the cloud entails a full backup of all data selected and then only incremental backups. Since full backups aren’t done after the first one, I wonder how reliable a backup to the cloud is. Shouldn’t a full backup be done every once in a while to decrease the chance of problems caused by a corrupted incremental backup?

Leo, any backup method should not be viewed in isolation but in conjunction with using other methods.

Acronis Cloud backups work differently to how local incremental backups do, so the risk of corrupted incremental backups is far less than with local backup chains.

All backup methods must start with an initial full backup image, so this includes Cloud backups, but after this initial backup, there are significant differences in the process used.  For cloud backups, a delta approach is used to identify all changes since the prior backup - this is intended to reduce the amount of data that has to be uploaded, while also using versioning techniques to store those changes over a defined period of time.

The Acronis Cloud servers will also have their own data protection schemes in place to safeguard the data on those servers from hardware failure, corruption, attack etc.

I personally would not consider using Acronis Cloud as my main or only backup method - for one it is the slowest method to implement unless you are among the few users with access to very high speed broadband connectivity.

You should have multiple different backup methjods in use, storing in several different locations, i.e. local backups to internal / external drives, and to network locations as well as having off-site backups to such as the Acronis Cloud and stored in safe sites etc.

Thx for the reply! Acronis cloud backup is not the only backup method I use! Can you say a bit more about how the risk of corrupted incremental backups in the cloud is far less than with local backup chains? And is there a way to validate my cloud backups like I can do with my local ones?

Leo, there is no validate option for Cloud storage data because this is not held in the same format (.tib / .tibx files) as local backup images, so the key aspects of data integrity are focused in the transfer of data when it is being uploaded / downloaded.

I have not heard of anyone reporting corruption of cloud backup data but I would expect that Acronis employ strong data protection measures for their servers that would provide for recovery of all data should that ever become necessary.

Take a read of the information in the following links which may help you further.
