Change in Backup scheme

Thread solved

I have chosen as backup scheme the default VersionChainScheme but after running it for some time I have run into trouble because of disk space. I backup to a 1TB USB drive.

I want a different scheme which will fit my USB drive. I do a daily backup and believe a full and 6 diff will give me an full backup every week and a diff every day.

If I check cleaning versions in the menu I have 4 full's and 10 diffs what I expected was like the example 1 permanent, 1 full, 5 diffs, 1 full, and the next diff will delete the oldest diff.

Can I change my present backup scheme without breaking all my data? Can I save my first an permanent to another location for safe keeping?

how would I change my scheme to fit 1 full, 6diff, 1full, diff with will delete the oldest diff?

thanx

Patrick, welcome to these public User Forums.

What are the actual sizes of your backup files here?

Automatic cleanup rules work only on completed backup version chains and only delete older files after a new chain has been started by the successful creation of a new Full backup file.

The easiest cleanup scheme to use is to: 'Store no more than X recent version chains' where you need to have suficient space on your destination backup drive to hold all those X chains plus 1 further Full backup file.  Note: if you select to keep the initial full backup file, then you need space for that file too.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question! My full backup is 170GB

I remembered that I still have some support time left as I am an new acronis member.

This led to some interesting experience with support!!  But eventually I got my answer, The guy insisted that I should delete my backup where I just had to say NO!

His claim was I couldn't change my backup scheme. I had to start over! I was not prepared to abandon my 1TB of backup just yet.

Eventually I changed the default version chain scheme into a custom scheme where 1full after 5x diffs and keep no more than 2 version chains. This was the answer is was looking for which is inline with what you suggests. If only I had read your message sooner.... The next full backup deleted the surplus of version chains.

(in fairness to the support guy...maybe his answer was lost in translation because i'm not native english speaking...)

why the default scheme was filling up my usb drive I do not know. It seems the automatic deleting works its magic different then example suggests.

Patrick, good to read that you have been able to switch backup schemes and get automatic cleanup working - thank you for the feedback.
