Failed to check the License Key. The key is disabled. Error
I've installed Advanced Work Station buid 11105 on a standalone XP Pro SP2 machine. I also have licenses for deduplication and universal restore installed.
When I try to backup (via management console and connecting to the local machine) I keep on getting this error which is not allowing me to do any backups.I've already raised a case once (00303433) where it was recommended that I reinstall the application making sure that the following services were running during the install:
1. COM+ System Application and Event System
2. Distributed Link Tracking Client
3. Distributed Transaction Coordinator
4. Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and RPC Locator
5. Windows Installer
The installation worked Ok and I could successfully do a backup afterwards.
I then tried to do a backup a couple of days later and I got the error:
Failed to check License Key. THe key is disabled.
What I did then was start the COM+ System Application, Distributed Transaction Coordinator & RPC Locator Services by putting them into automatic startup (from manual) and rebooting the computer. This seemed to work Ok the first time but now after rebooting again i'm getting the error again.
When I look in the logs I see the following error:
Failed to establish remote connection: Remote connections are disabled.
I've looked on the forums and it recommends to disable simple file sharing which is already disabled.
A copy of the logs are attached.
I've reinstalled a second time & disabled virus scanning and the firewall to eliminate them as sources to the problem.
I also notice that my licenses which are valid (I bought them off the acronis website) on the license server are either showing a renew date of today or have an expiry date of today which doesn't make sense.
Is anyone seeing the same problem or know how to solve it?

Hi Stephen,
I tried again following the instructions on the knowledgebase to clean out the registry, delete the database etc and full reboot but still getting the same error.
I've also got errors now with DCOM with the Acronis Agent User requesting local activation permissions for Dot1xCfg and RegSrvc to stop the DCOM errors I granted them the access but i've still got the Network Service asking for the following permissions.
I'm still getting the error even though if I stop and then restart all the Acronis services it at least allows me to do a backup but starts reporting Invalid Index Errors. Its like if the acronis services start too early in the boot up sequence it doesn't work properly and my laptop the software is installed on has a huge amount of software on it (hence using acronis to image back it up).
I've hoping there is another solution than just reinstalling all the time which sounds a bit like pot luck.

I've been doing a bit of further investigation and I found the following:
The two programs that the Acronis Agent User wanted to access RegSrvc and Dot1xCfg are associated with the Intels wireless NIC on the Laptop the computer is installed on. I started having problems changing wireless profiles when the Acronis services were running.
So I upgraded the the Intel NIC drivers but still no go so I uninstalled and changed the NIC enumeration order in XP in an attempt to get the software to lock the license nto the inbuit wired NIC. But because the NIC wasn't plugged in it as registered onto one of my VMWare virtual NICs.
It all seems to be working at the moment (1-2 hours since install & 2 reboots so we will see if it lasts) but I will need to reinstall and get it to lock onto the correct NIC.
I think the problem is caused by the fact that the Intel NIC software doesn't run immediately on boot up into XP (i.e. wireless only works when you are logged on) so the NIC isn't avaiable because the Acronis software starts up before you log in. As the VMWare NIC is a windows service it is already running so the problem doesn't exist. So it probably a good idea not to lock onto a MAC address associated with a wireless NIC.
Will update again after further testing.

I have reinstalled Acronis again and this time successfully bound it to my wired integrated NIC.
But now I get the same error if the wired NIC is not connected to the LAN.
Basically if the NIC that Acronis has bound to is not active then Acronis will not work. It looks like for a fully local installation the MAC address that the computer is bound to is the first active enumerated card. If this card is not active on bootup then the software will not work.
This is pathetic if you use a laptop and you switch networks.
Will wait until Acronis answers the case I have raised.

Have upgraded to build 11133 and this does not fix the licensing issue.
It's been over a week since I raised the case and still not a single email from Acronis support except for the case number.

Thank you for using Acronis Corporate Products
We are aware of the problem, today I can propose you the following solution:
Please boot the system, wait for the Intel NIC card to be initialized and restart
Acronis Managed Machine Service: Start -> Run -> Type Services.msc -> Right-click on Acronis Managed Machine Service -> Restart.
See if the issue remains and let us know the results.
I can also replace the license with a Acronis Backup & Recovery Workstation license, this version doesn't have Acronis License Server and this will help to overcome the issue.

Hi Oleg,
Thanks for the MMS restart suggestion. I found this out from other forum topics but it is very problematic if you are using scheduled backups and you forget to restart the service after the last reboot.
In converting the license to a Workstation license will the Deduplication functionality work because I use centralised vaults with deduplication to backup my laptop over the network (wired and wireless)?
I also need to be able to manage Acronis workstations installations (normal and advanced version) on remote computers as well as create the recovery CD with the universal restore option.
Will the problem be resolved in the future? If so will it be in the next build?

You are unable to use Acronis Backup & Recovery 10.0 Workstation for the mentioned purposes (the recovery CD with Acronis Universal Restore is available only). Deduplication and remote management are available for the advanced versions of Acronis Backup & Recovery 10.0.
Will the problem be resolved in the future? If so will it be in the next build?
The issue is still under investigation, I can't provide you with the exact time frame or promise you the resolution.

I have run into this problem twice now on the same server using Acronis Backup & Recovery For an SBS Server. It has happened both times when ACRONIS have attempted to fix my snap deploy problems!!
They try to fix one product and cause major problems with the other of their product!!
And now I am waiting to have someone yet again try and fix this problem. Last time they had to reissue a new license despite the fact that my license server says my license is valid!
It would be nice to actually have one of the Acronis products actually functioning for more than a day!!
Is there a solution to correct and fix this problem?
Seems when I check further into my license server it has a 5 day license?????????

Is this a product we are expected to constantly update our licenses for? And why is it that the TRIAL versions of all their software didn't cause anywhere near as many problems?

Two week ago I updated to the build 11133 to get running the software again after the Console was not able to reconnect because my machine reside on a domain and pwd need to be change frequently. Now after the update was done with the new build I was able to run the Acronis software for about a week. Today the software could not be use due of the key is not licence. Does someone could answer why this error come out and how to fix it. This is not acceptable.

Same issue here, I have 2 NICs in my computer (one wireless and one wired). The license was checked in while the wireless NIC was disabled. When it is enabled afterwards (after a reboot a few days later), I get a warning from the license server that my license is not available and has expired only a few days after checking it in. Not surprisingly after what I have read on this forum, this seems to happen after the reboot.
Can Acronis please tell us what is happening here and what can be done to solve the issue ?

I have the same issue...
FAILED TO CHECK LICENSE KEY. The Key Is Disabled.
This is ridiculous... I have more problems with ABR, than any other version... I've lost hours of work time & money... over varying issues with ABR. From installation, to License server issues, which all got resolved after hours of on line chat's that "eventually" came to a resolved. Literally hours...
No this... is happening for no understandable reason... AND THERE's no Fix here??
I think this ABR is way to fragile with bells & whistles... and honestly losing hope with this product after using it for over 3 years!

I just got this error in the backup plan only on local machine where everything except license server is installed.
See attached screen shot.
I have to say, uninstalling and reinstalling just the agent did the trick for now.

I thought i would add that i definitely do have my manager on a laptop with license server on a seperate server 2003. Although there is obviously a bug with this, the fix was quick and easy. Only seems to do this to my local machine, otherwise i am very happy with the product and ease of setup.

Well, unfortunately here we are a week later and same issue is occurring on local machine. I'll now have to uninstall and reinstall the agent once again. Hopefully there is a fix for this soon because it is rather annoying to have to reinstall something every time i want to manage local machine. Keep this issue alive!

Okay, here are the details.
My laptop is where the Acronis server actually is with all components. This is also the same computer that is having the trouble. I take this laptop back and forth from office and home, so sometimes I connect to my wireless network at home and log in through built in windows 7 vpn to my work network. I am going to test this out, but I believe i might have started up the "manage local machine" icon before i logged into vpn which would make a lot of sense why this issue happened. I'm not 100% though. I still believe it should pull the license once back in the network where the license server is located, but I'm guessing that having the main install on a laptop going in and out of the network is part of the issue.
I will try and test this more thoroughly now that i know some key facts also.

If I correctly understood you, Acronis License Server is installed in your work network. Actually, I can replace your Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Advanced Workstation license with the Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Workstation license. Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Workstation doesn't use Acronis License Server, and the issue will be solved.
Or you can install the Agent specifying the IP address of Acronis License Server instead of computer name, probably, the program will be able to check the license key properly (the results depend on your network settings).

Yes, this is the only machine that is ever out of the network. All other workstations are backing up and doing great.
I don't believe that putting the ip address would help because I have the network closed off to outside influence unless you're on the vpn anyway, so I'm guessing we would run into the same issue.
Maybe trading in one of my licenses for the workstation license is a good idea. Let me know how to proceed.
