Password not working unless all full backups present

Thread solved

Hi All, I have a series of weekly full backups of my PC: backup.tibx, backup-1.tibx, backup-2.tibx, and backup-3.tibx. These are stored on a USB HDD and are password protected. If all four files are present, then I can open these tibx files as if I wanted to recover something. However, if I remove one, e.g. backup-1.tibx, then my password doesn't work for any of them and I cannot access them. Is that how things are supposed to work? I had assumed that each full backup was independent of whether the other existed. I just switched to differential, but if there is a way to get the full backups to be truly independent of each other such that I can open one with my password without needing all to be present, please let me know. Thanks in advance!

Thanks Steve for the references. I’m not sure I understand the rationale behind that limitation; I’ll take a look these, regardless.

The new .tibx file chains now include metadata elements which are continually updated as new files are added to the chain, therefore have become inter-dependent.

See forum topic: Full Backups no independent entity - where a very similar aspect to this issue has been discussed in some detail.

Steve, that last forum entry was key to my understanding. Thanks for directing me to it. I agree with Christian (the OP) regarding disagreeing with the philosophy of the way tibx is handling the full backup. So, I need to choose whether I want to have a limited set (2 or 3) of full backups where all of those files including the "index" tibx is required to be intact, or go through the hassle of setting up a separate task every time I do a full back up. Perhaps the latter will not be such a big deal if I set all of the desired settings to be default. Time will tell. Thanks again for your help.
