CLoned for backup then old HDD would not boot into WIn10

Thread needs solution

While doing the clone, I used an external HDD ( USB) as the target.  The clone works.  But during the process, Acronis hung up.,  Required a full cold boot to get the computer to work.  The cloned drive was disconnected.  The system was booted, and it booted to a DIFFERENT drive inside the computer than originally set.  I can not get this to stop.

BIOS is untouched.  Computer has not been opened, so not changes in there....

My system contains 2 SSD ( 2tb and 500gb) and 2 HDD, all internal.  The preferred boot is into the 2TB SSD.  It is currently booting into the 500gb SSD..

Any ideas how to get this behavior to stop???

What bit of SW did Acronis put on my machine that did this?  How to remove that SW?

Frank, welcome to these public User Forums.

What version / build of Acronis True Image do you have / use for cloning?
Is it ATI 2020 #25700 as per this forum?

Are you running a dual-boot environment on this computer system?

How did you perform the clone process?

One of the purposes of cloning is to modify the Windows Boot Configuration Data to enable the computer to boot from the cloned disk drive, which can cause issues when that target drive is being connected externally.  This in turn can result in changes to BIOS settings depending on the way in which cloning is used.

There is no 'bit of SW' put on your computer by ATI during the cloning process and therefore there is nothing to be removed either.

Any changes made by cloning are to either the BCD or to the BIOS as a direct result of how cloning was performed.

Note: it is always recommended to make a full disk backup of the source drive before starting an clone operation.

I thought I posted to the 2017 forum.... that is the SW I am using  2017......  Feel free to move this thread as is appropriate.....

But some feedback.....

I have no backup....  I must fix the mess I have now. I am reasonably good at computer fixing, but I am no expert..... I can follow directions.

This is a single OS environment: Win10

How did I do the clone?  I pushed the right buttons.... I have no idea of how else to answer the question.... I selected the source and the target and said go..... ATI did the rest.....

The Source was my C: SSD drive, my target was a USB HDD.  ( this was all done so that I would have a precise copy of my C drive just in case something happened....)

You stated:that no SW was added... but ATI, I suspect or apparently did, change my Boot Configuration Data.  ( to me the same thing, to you, obviously not)

Assuming that was done, how do I go back to what I had?  How do I figure out what I had?

I should say that I need this computer for work.  To get from being fired, I had to do something... that was to put on the machine a dual boot program that has allowed me to, during the boot cycle to select the correct drive to boot from... ( EasyBCD 2.4.  This has worked but it is a stopgap....

I need to figure this out....Help is much appreciated.

Frank, thanks for the extra information.

If you have EasyBCD installed, then you can use that application to set the default OS for the computer to boot from, which in turn will update the BCD to that effect.

In your initial post you wrote:

The preferred boot is into the 2TB SSD.  It is currently booting into the 500gb SSD..

When the PC boots from the 500GB SSD, does it boot into Windows? or does it just try and fail to find an OS?

Launch EasyBCD and look at the initial panel to see what it says is the Default OS?
If this is not your 2TB SSD OS, then click on the second button to 'Edit Boot Menu' then in that panel select the correct OS to be the default.

You can also adjust how long to wait when booting etc on this panel.
Click on the button to 'Save Settings' when finished.
