Thread needs solution

I had been fighting a false Protection State error which said I had not yet created a backup, even though I had more than one archive out on my external HD connected to the USB port and was available during the startup of Acronis. At that time I was at build 2009.9709. After updating to build 2009.9796, the problem went away. I can't be sure what level fixed it, but going from 9709 to 9796 fixed it for me. I just wanted to pass that information along in case someone else has the same false Protection State Error.

I have to take back what I said in my previous post, where I thought the false Protection State error was indicated, saying I have not created a System Volume Backup, even though there are several system Archives out on the HD connected to the USB port when I start Acronis. It looks like it gets into this state if I just once start Acronis with the external HD not attached and ready. Then, after that, I get the error, even though I re-boot the PC with the external HD attached and ready, and start Acronis. I see Acronis communicating with G:, the external HD, during startup, but it will not clear the error condition.

I have run into this problem with the updated build also.  Were you able to find a way to fix this erroneous error?  I hope that Acronis is actively trying to fix the problem.

I've had this problem for some time with both builds Charles mentions. Knowing I have several images stored externally, I just disregard the message. However, you might try creating the backup on your C drive (I believe this is the default location) and see if that cures the problem. It might not be the best place to store images (in case of a crash) but may stop the erroneous message. I may just try it myself.

That seemed to do the trick! Even though I always have at least 6 images stored on an external USB HD, I would always get the message 'System Volume Backup Not Created'. After the first imagewas made, the message was gone but once the external HD was powered down, ATI would not recognize the backup was still there, thus the message.

Just created the System Volume Backup to the C drive, powered down, rebooted, and ATI still sees it. No message.

Although I am not a computer whiz, it seems like this would be an easy fix for Acronis.  Basically TI 2009 should know where the backups are stored so that if the drive containing the backup is not found it should prompt for the drive to be connected.

I have assigned a drive letter to the external hard drive so it's not like the drive is jumping around from E: to F: to G: etc.

Were you able to access the backups on your external drive after placing a new image on your c: drive?

Yes! ATI sees all the images, 6 of them on (E) and the new one on (C). I mounted the new one and a random one from the (E) drive. All looks good. This was from the Windows environment. Didn't try it with the rescue disk but there should be no difference. Again, this will end the message but (C) is not the best place to store all images.

I opened Tasks and Logs and I right clicked on my unscheduled task and selected start.  This produced a new backup.

I then opened Backup and Restore and the new backup was there and the method used according to TI 2009 was incremental. That is how the backup method was defined when I created the task.  Does an 8.8 GB incremental backup sound reasonable?  The first full (original) backup is 11.3 GB.

I then clicked on the button [Browse for backup...] and located the first backup on the external drive.  It appeared under the task along with the new backup.  The first backup is shown as a full backup under method.

I could right click on the task, select edit and change the backup method to create full backup after 2 incremental backups. Then the next time I backup using the task the images should be consolidated into a new full backup.  If that happens, I'll feel that everything's as it should be.  I may try this when I have some time.

Thanks for your comments about this problem, about how you can prevent this false error by creating an archive on the C drive. Rather than creating this C drive archive, I will probably wait for the Acronis people to come up with a final fix. It would just be my luck that I would have a C drive crash with the latest archive on it, instead of being on the external drive. I can live with the false error, because I can still get to my archives on the external drive if necessary. Charles Ranheim

Someone else may be able to comment on incremental backup size.  I only do Full backups.

You might be able to right click on your full backup task and create a new backup and then browse for the other backups created by the task.  This way you would not have to backup to your c: drive.
