Gave up with MFT bitmap corrupted error - File backup??

Thread needs solution

Everything had been working for a year with my laptop; suddenly I start getting the MFT bitmap corrupted error. This is on a Dell Laptop running Windows 7 (32 bit) using Acronis 11. Went back and forth with tech support, tried the checking disk multiple times (no errors), installing, uninstalling and re-installing the Snapi drivers, etc. Finally tech support says I have a disk with bad sectors and contact the manufacturer. Just great!!

OK, so now I am doing a complete file backup instead of imaging my hard disk. That works fine. Question I have is what happens if my hard disk fails; how do I recover? I assume I would need to get a new disk, install windows, and then do a complete recovery using my file backup? Is that pretty much it? Or does the file backup also back up the registry and system files so I don't need to install Windows?

Thanks!

The file backup will not get you up and running with a new disk. YOu will need to reinstall Windows, then your apps, then transfer your content.

As you do this, a good idea is to a couple of "original" backup points
- install windows, the latest updates, IE/browser, various Microsoft Apps if any, your favorite apps, then do a backup from the CD,
- then restore your content and install ATI.

I understand that a file backup would not get me up and running. However, once Windows is installed can't I do a file restore (assuming the entire PC was backed up) which then should get me back to a normal state. Or does the File backup not backup any files locked by Windows and system files such as the Registry?

You will not be able to restore your applications and system through restoring files.

You might be able to pull this off if you copy all the files on the disk and then reinstall Windows on top of it (a repair install). I have never tried this myself but the windows installer is your best shot at rebuilding the system without losing your applications and content.

And in this process, the Windows 7 installer is very good.
