Access to the file is denied error message on BU write to Local drive
I am running 32-bit Vista Home Premium with SP2
I was running True Image Home Version 10.0 build 4942 and all worked fine. Just upgraded to TI Home 2011 Update 1 Build 6696 and am having problems getting BU written to Local Drives. My only Network connection is through a router to broadband Internet.
I get “Access to the file is denied” error when attempting to BU a Logical Partition of my C:\ Drive to an internal drive (D:\), which is a “Shared” drive. This problem does not occur when the BU destination is either of two external USB drives - neither of which are “Shared.” Noting that, I tried turning off sharing on D:\ as the BU destination but get the same error. I also tried “Run as Administrator” with destination D:\ set as both shared and not shared and get the same access denied error, along with, sometimes, a “The back up is corrupted”, Warning.
This appears to be a problem specific to BU of the Logical Partition on my C:\ Drive to my other internal Drive (D:\). BU of the only Folder in the Logical Partition to the D: drive works fine (running with my own Permissions, not “As Administrator”). Also, BU of the entire Logical Partition to either of the external USB drives works fine – again on my own Permissions. Again, this all worked fine with TI Home V10
I have attached a TI-generated Acronis System Report, along with two Log files which show a Successful BU of the Logical Partition to an external USB drive, a Successful BU of the only Folder in the Logical Partition to the internal D: drive and an Unsuccessful BU of the Logical Partition to the internal D: drive (I believe this one was using my own Permissions vice As Administrator).
Thanks in advance for your help,
Charlie

Pat,
Before installation I downloaded Knowledge Base Article 13416 which says you can either uninstall a previous version or install TI Home 2011 over a previous version. I'm pretty sure I did the later.
Device Manager shows TWO Acronis Devices:
- Acronis Backup Archive Explorer, whose Properties show as "...not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)" and a Driver Date of 6/2/2010, Acronis Version 4.0.0.610
- Acronis True Image Backup Archive Explorer, whose properties show as "...working properly." with a Driver Date of 11/15/2005 Acronis Version 4.0.0.610
Vista "Programs and Features" display shows only one True Image installation, TI Home 2011 which I installed on 4/29.
Looks like I should have uninstalled V10 first. I think I saw a download on you site that was an uninstall cleanup app...
I think we are getting somewhere...thanks,
Charlie

Using Windows Device Management, just uninstallt the Acronis True Image Backup Archive Explorer.
Then Uninstall ATI 2011
Use the cleanup utility.
Move your existing backups to a hidden folder on the disk where they are today. This will avoid that ATI 2011 will rediscover them and create a long (useless) list of them.
If you have a registry cleaner like Jv16, use it.
Reboot.
Reinstall 2011 and recreate new tasks.

Pat,
Thanks for the quick response!
I'll give it a try and let you know how it turns out.

Pat,
I followed your directions, item by item.
After completing the fresh install I got Windows Error messages when trying to run the program. Double clicking on TrueImage.exe I immediately get "Acronis True Image Home 2011 has stopped Working". Double clicking on TrueImageLauncher, I get, "Acronis True Image Home is not installed".
But, in addition, using the ATIH 2011 clean up utility, I had my Acronis Disk Director Suite corrupted so that it will not start. A CAREFUL examination of the 14871 KB article on using the utility shows a line down in the text (instead of at the top of the page, maybe?) that says this will happen. I totally missed that. Another reason this happened is that the text in the pop up window when running the utility NEVER says it will uninstall ALL of the listed Acronis products (my DD Suite V10.0 is listed). The warning messages lead me to believe the next prompt would be to select the Acronis product you wanted uninstalled. After selecting "y" at the bottom of the first window, WHAM, it's done! These screens are attached.
Anyway, this is really discouraging. Before I started all of this I had two functioning utilities. Now I have neither.
I purchased the DD Suite in Dec 2006 and I have the Serial number, but, cannot find the installation file. Oh, and I thought I could just do a System Restore in Vista and get the DD Suite back. WRONG! It was the first time ever, after using SR many times - that I got the error message after all was done that, "System Restore was not Successful".
Sorry about the whining. It's just soooo discouraging...

Were you able to get rid of the various Acronis Devices?
It is strange that you cannot reinstall ATI 2011 properly. If you ran the installer and it didn't work, the first thing to do is to reboot, run the install again and choose "repair install".
If this doesn't work, uninstall ATI 2011, run the cleanup utility again, reboot in and retry.
Unfortunately, I am running out of ideas if you cannot get the software installed properly. Some users reported better success after disabling startup items and third party services with msconfig.
If you have a system backup you made with v10, you can restore it with v10 CD or 2011 CD. That might be a way to get back on track.

Pat,
Thanks, again for your quick response!
Yes, I was able to delete the Acronis True Image Backup Archive Explorer and the only Acronis Device showing in Device Manager is, Acronis Backup Archive Explorer.
I will try your Rec to do the "Repair install" etc and if no joy, will contact Customer Service.
Thanks, again for all of your considerations.

Charles,
Wrt to DD10, you might be able to go to Acronis.com, register your serial number and get the software from there.

Pat,
Almost forgot...
Good idea about the CD Recovery Disk application. I was thinking I would have to wait until I had TI 2011 working in Vista until I could get my Acronis Disk Director Suite back. Thanks.
On another note, I will also ping Cust Service about that Utility Program. I have a lot of experience with Human Factors both academic and real world (Retired Navy Pilot). It is inexcusable that this utility would delete EVERY Acronis program without explicitly stating in a WARNING, that,
"YOU ARE ABOUT TO DELETE ALL ALL ALL OF THE FOLLOWING ACRONIS PROGRAMS ON YOU SYSTEM...DO YOU WANT TO PROCEED?"
Thanks again,
Charlie

Pat,
Final note...
After all of the above, yesterday I just shut down the system, planning to start, again, today.
Just when I thought things could not get any worse, this AM I boot up to find that now Vista will NOT boot. I broke out my Vista Install disk and did a System Repair and I am nowback where I was at the end of Sunday's exchange.
I will be hitting up Customer Support with all of this, today.
Again, thanks for your efforts,
Charlie
