clone recovery

Thread needs solution

With TIH 2011 I have cloned my 1TB w7 disc to a usb 1TB SATA disc. This is because I think my operating disc is reaching its sell by date and I intend using the USB disc to replace it.
From the forums I understand that I cannot recover the USB disc to a possible fresh 1TB disc that I may use to replace my expired current disc in my desktop.
My OS only occupies 80G of the current 1TB disc - I do not need more than maybe 200G!
I have a spare 350g USB disc.
The question is - Can I make a disc image backup from my desktop to the 350G disc merely to recover a full disk Image even though the desktop 1Tb is much larger than the USB 350g disc?
Thanks.

Yes, you can.
The first thing to do is to look at your disk managment console. Search for Create and Format hard disk partitions. Take a screen shot of your system disk partitions.
Then do a full disk *all* partition disk and partition backup of that disk.
Make sure your recovery CD allows you to boot your computer and browse to your backup.
Then put your new system disk at the same spot as your current big disk.
Boot your computer on the Acronis CD and start the restore: restore one partition at a time, in the same order they were in the first disk, leaving an offset of 1MB before the first partition. Do not resize any partition except for the C:\ partition or any other user partition that you have (do not resize the system reserved partition, or any hidden partition). No need to reboot between each partition restore.
When you are done, restore the MBR+track0 and the disk signature.
