Restoring backup of C: to new computer - any dangers?

Thread needs solution

I've done a full backup of my C drive.

1) Say I get a new PC and it's all ready to go - and I then download True Image Home 2011 on it, plug in my USB drive that has the C backup on it, and restore the backup to the new computer's C drive. Wondering if anything could go wrong here in terms of it transferring over undesirable files that the new computer won't be compatible with? Like it'd wreck the new computer in some way? Or is it totally safe?

2) The OS of the PC I backed up was Vista. If I restore this back up to a PC with say Windows 7 will it overwrite that and install a full working copy of Vista instead or something? If so, which folders do I have to omit when doing the backup to keep the new computer's operating system but just transfer over the documents and installed programs?

Assuming you have really made a full disk and partition backup, ie all partitions of the disk that contains the C:\ partition are in the backup (I insist on all partitions for a disk and partition backup).

1) You cannot restore your image to another computer, without the Acronis Plus Pack (a paid for addon), that enables the Universal Restore function. UR is not necessary to restore on a new disk in the same computer.

2) If you restore the entire backup, this will erase everything on your disk. You can restore only some partitions, and the underlying target partitions will be completely erased. If you use the Acronis recovery CD to restore, you can also restore only specific files and folders (like user content), and that is just like copying files on the disk.

If you just want to restore some files (no programs, Windows, etc.), you can use a file backup instead of the full disk and partition backup we assumed above.

Pat, you said I can't restore an image to another computer without the Plus Pack. Will it work if all I'm recovering from the .tib file is documents like .txt files and .jpgs?

Yes. Files can be restored to the new machine. Just not the OS and the installed programs without the Pluspack.
