Moving a Backup File

Thread needs solution

Hi,

BAck again this new version arconis is frustating.

Background.

I make a custom sceheme backup so i can do a full backup then hit backup to make a diff backup. When i feel i have have time i create another full backup and do diff backups again. (I have saved all the setting as defult so i dont have to select every time)

I got a usb 3 drive (i never usual backup arconis to usb drives as restoring from them is a pain and never works) i always backup to a nas. I thought i wonder how fast this drivei s so did a full backup to the usb. I thought no problem once its done i will copy to the nas a carry on doing diff backups.

And of course the new version wont allow that i have been trying for hours now to get that to work i can copy to the drive but the new version of arconis wont let me use that backup to do a diff backup to. (the backup button is missing) I have tried explorer copy, a arconis move backup. If i try a backup it deletes the backup and overwrites it. It just seems like this new version of are arconis is lacking in network storage support the old version was fine with such concepts.

Surely i can move a backup to another drive and still use it?

thanks

Andy

Andrew,

Click on the My Backups down arrow and select 'Update backup list'

As you have found with this version of TIH it is the first to allow you to move your images to another place, but you have to use the 'move backup' box and not do it yourself.

Is it deleting the full or the differential?

Andrew,

Unfortunately, you will not save much time by doing first the backup on the USB disk and then moving the backup to the NAS.

If you still want to do this, you should start with a new task. Make sure your backup scheme is set to differential. Do your first backup: it will be a full. Then go to operations > other > move backup. This will move your backup to the new destination. At this point, you should be able to continue backing up using this task, and this will create differential backups on the new destination.
Make sure you use the latest build as previous builds had moving issues.

hi Pat,

Iwas testing this version as i sometime have to work away from my network. I tried moving the backup file and still no lck its still wont let me backup to the file i even validated the backup as well. It deletes the full backup as i did the full backup and then moved the file. As soon as i had the issue i click check for new verisons of software to make suer i was up to date in the help menu.

Andrew,

Could you export your task and post it here or jot down the exact settings you have for this task.

Andrew,

Just to make sure. With AT2011, there is no notion of "creating" an incremental backup on top of a full backup. Backup tasks are set *initially* as full, incremental OR differential tasks. If the task is an incremental/differential, then ATI creates first a full backup, then a chain of incremental/differential.
So you cannot create a new task as differential, and "add it" to an existing full.
If you start a differential chain, ATI will create the full backup first. If you then move the full somewhere else, ATI will create a new full before the next incremental.
If you want to create a full locally, then put it on the network, you need to do 2 things:
- set a new task as differential,
- let ATI create the new full locally,
- use the ATI move backup command to move the full to the network,
- you will be able to verify that the new destination of the backup is where you moved it,
- run the same task again to see the differential appear.

Pat,

As i said in my inital post i always setup as default (saved as default) a custom scheme to make a differential then hit backup button after the inital and bingo i get my differential. But the backup button after i have moved the backup using ati home is missing. I have validated and still no backup button. If ask it to recreate the setting it asks all the backup questions and overwrites the inital backup. To be clear i did the intial on to the usb to test the speed of the drive also when i go a way from the network i take a usb drive and backup to that and when i get back i want to move the backups to the nas for completeness.

Andy

Colin,

I'm away from my network at the moment as soon as i get backup thursday i will list the inforamtion you need.

thanks

Andrew,

There is this feature in ATI where it tries to remember where each TIB has been saved. So, if you change the destination of the backup, ATI will try to remember. For example, let's say you do a full on the USB, then move the backup to the NAS using the move backup command, now ATI expects the next backups to happen on the NAS. If you leave the network and change the destination to the USB and create an incremental (incr1), ATI will try to remember that the full is on the NAS and the incr1 on the USB. If you move the incr1 to the NAS, ATI wil probably be very confused.
If you want some flexibility with ATI 2011, you should set up 2 different tasks. One backing up on the NAS, and the other backing up to your USB. Don't try to move back and forth.

If you don't have the backup button on a task, it can be normal. This happens when you browse to a TIB file from a chain that ATI has no knowledge of, using the browse button. It can also happen when you validate a TIB file that ATI has no knowledge of (any longer).

I ran some tests with the move button, and it is working correctly on my test systems: the backup doesn't lose its "backup" button.

Since you ran probably several test, I suggest you move the TIB files you want to keep to a hidden folder on the same disk they are now and delete all the backup tasks you have from ATI. Then set up the 2 different tasks for each backup destination.
