Acronis True Image Home 2010 slow to create full system backup on Windows 7 64-bit system

Thread needs solution

I just completed setting up my new Windows 7 computer system and I wanted to do a full system backup. My new system contains pretty much everything that my old system had minus a bunch of junk. Nothing new added.

When I went to do the backup the estimated time jumped to 8 hours then 9 then 14 then back to 9 and then to 7 and it was sitting pretty much at 7 for quite some time. The progress bar did move indicating that the system backup was taking place but on my old system a complete backup would take about an hour and that included a verification. I canceled after about an hour as it was getting late. Can anyone tell me why on my new Windows 7 Pro machine with 6 GB of memory Acronis is running like a dog? Am I doing something wrong? Very confused.

You are not alone. I have exactly the same problem; backup has now run for seven hours and is at 69%. This is the same computer (minus some junk programs) that prior to installing Windows 7 64 bit and upgrading to True Image Home 2010 would do a complete backup in less than one hour. Any answers out there??

I'm having the exact same problem with TIH 2010 and Windows 7 x64. My 75GB C: drive backup has been running for almost 11 hours and is only 45% complete! Version 11 took less than 2 hours to backup and verify the same drive when running Vista x64. Does Acronis (or anyone) know how to fix this?

Likewise...have been using TrueImage in various incarnations for several years. This one is a dog. On a 32 bit XP with 2 gb memory, TrueImage marched right along. On my new 8 gig, 64 bit Windows 7, backup would take days...TrueImage 2010 ran all night and still had not created a partition image.

Boy, the next upgrade ought to be free, cause this one sure doesn't work.

Same problem here. I just upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. Have been using Home 10 for the past year, and really liking it. I signed on to the trial version of True Image Home 2010 - and at first I couldn't believe it, when the estimated time was .... 4 days!!!!!!

I cancelled, tried it again and it went down to 1 day 20 hours!!!

I decided to go ahead with it. It's been running for five hours, has completed 22%, and says there's another 16 hours to go. I have no idea what's going on.

I know that I have a lot of stuff on the desktop, and it was taking me 4 or 5 hours with 10 and Vista. But this is absurd.

Even though Acronis is highly rated, my brother, a computer expert, told me he knows other good backup and recovery programs.

There's some basic flaw when it takes a day to do a full backup. And I heard that Acronis technical support is non-existent.

An update:

I started the backup at 6pm last night. It's now 9 am the next day, it's been running 15 hours, and there's still an hour left.

And as you all know, it slows the computer while it's running - and this is exactly what I need to avoid - having my computer functioning slowly, when I am working.

This is ridiculous.

I thought it was just me. I am running Windows Vista 64 Ultimate and have noticed that Acronis 2010 is very slow compared to Acronis 2009. What used to take 3-4 hours is taking 12 hours+.
What happened to this release? Is anyone getting feedback from the vendor?

I also just installed TIH 2010 as a trial (I used TIH 2009 before) and it solved the scheduler problems but now I have this long backup tasks as you described. I am running Vista x64 Home Premium.

And another thing:
Has anybody else but me problems in the computer performance during the backup? I mean that my computer is not responding for around one minute in a cycle of around 3-4 minutes. This is annoying! The priority of TIH 2010 is set to LOW and usually this should give priority to other applications, right? I am using an AMD Phenom X4 9950 processor and it's far away from being on full load. So what's the reason why TIH slows down and partially blocks the computer that much?

strange i have win7 x64 i takes 8min to make backup maybe 15 to restore

@Bashkim:
Maybe your current Windows installation is not the large. I have to backup one Vista x64 partition with around 100 GB and one data partition with around 75 GB currently. I am doing an incremental backup, two tasks, one to ASZ and one to an NAS-HDD.

I have taken a nice screenshot by today:
The remaining runtime on my NAS-HDD for the backup task is 49.710 days.... that's kind of funny! Finally the backup finishes MUCH quicker, of course. ;-)

Anyway, this didn't happen at ATI Home 2009! The remaining runtime is everything else but reliable at ATI Home 2010. I hope that Acronis will do something against it as well as against the frequently not responding computer though the task priority is low.

I have the same problem. TIH 2010, Win 7 32 bit, 3 GB Ram, core duo 3 Ghz, USB external 1TB hardrive is destination off of my local C drive. Takes about 12 hours for 67 Gb. Has anyone found anything that helped speed up ????

We have no response from Acronis support on this thread.....

Hello all,

Thank you for posting your questions, I will be happy to help.

Because of the latest major changes in Windows Vista and Windows 7 native snapshot driver (VolSnap), there were some modifications introduced in Acronis True Image Home 2010 (starting from Build 6029). The Acronis native snapshot driver (snapman) was moved from UpperFilters to LowerFilters to avoid conflicts with VolSnap (which could have lead to backups failure or data corruption in backups). This change may sometimes manifest itself in a freezing Windows Vista or Windows 7 operating system on machines with rare software and hardware configurations or reducing the software performance.

To solve the issue please install a special driver update:

Download SnapAPI Build 503;

- Unpack it and install with Disabled logging.

- Reboot the computer to complete the changes and see if the issue remains.

Please let us know the results, we should be sure that the program runs flawlessly.

If the issue remains, please let us know about it, I will provide you with the instructions on how to collect the necessary diagnostic information to find the exact reason of the low performance.

If the provided information is not clear or if you have any other question do not hesitate to post them and we will be glad to answer.

Thank you.

I found out what my problem was. I had a bad HD cable so I was running in PIO mode 4 rather than dma. Backup times are fine now.

hi
I tried your solution but it did not work

I work with a SEVEN 64 ULTIMATE , ACRONIS 10 , 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB 7200 RPM hard disk
the backup is done on a 7200 E SATA EXTERNAL HARD DISK

before SEVEN , the backup tooked 1H30 , now 20 Hours

the size of the backup is the same

have you any idea?

regards

Wow, this solution was difficult to find (finally googled: acronis slow, since the search for 49,710 days didn't lead to a solution).

I've installed the "special driver update" and it looks faster, but I just wanted to add to the "me, too" posts. I encountered the problem, and hopefully Oleg's solution works.

I have been searching these threads about all the problems with TI 2010 and the entry just above about the "Download SnapAPI Build 503" is the only apparent fix to any of them I have seen. However, long times is not my problem. I can create images (yes running under Windows 7), more slowly than previous T I versions under XP, etc. but NONE will restore.

I see this as the most common complaint in these threads. I cannot reliably search all the many hundreds of entries, so: Has anyone found a fix for this one? Has anyone had any success with TI support on this issue? Has TI support decided to answer any posed questions?

It now appears that entry to support is completely eliminated. I can not find a way to e-mail or to chat. Chat was available just a few days ago, now it cannot be found.
NICE GOING ACRONIS. (Are you still in business?)

As noted in a prior post above I was also having backups run for hours and hours. I've been running a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate. I found that in my case the default setting W7 had created for my external USB hard drive was "Quick Removal." Changing that to "Better Performance" in Windows' Device Manager led to a dramatic improvement in my backup times. They're still slower than previous TI versions, but are much, much better. If you have an USB external drive, you should check this setting.

My continuing problem has been very slow validations. I was hoping that updating the SnapAPI driver as suggested above would improve both backups and validations, but I'm not really seeing any significant speed difference after that installation. It appears that TI 2010 validates the entire partition even when I do only a small incremental backup! Since I automatically validate every backup, I don't need TI to validate against the entire partition every time. Is there to make TI validate only the specific data actually backed-up in each incremental run?

I too am curious about the performance issue/question. AS for your question on where to find email/chat support.
The acronis website main page has a tab dedicate to support which as a button labeled "start here" from there you can get into technical issues and from there both chat and email support are available.

Hello all,

Thank you for posting your question, I will be happy to help. Please accept our apologies for the delay with the response.

We have an article in our database on how to troubleshoot the issues with slow backups, please this article for more information.

Also please refer to this article for the instructions on how to enable the DMA mode for a certain channel/controller in BIOS (the mode mentioned by Art).

Validation checks the integrity of the entire chain, you are unable to verify an incremental backup only (I will submit a request to the appropriate department, maybe, this possibility will be added for the future releases).

To get the access to Live chat service or e-mail support one should go to this page, under Contact us click on the Start here button, select Have questions. From the pop up select Technical issue with product. Select FULL Version selection \Select product from drop down box.  Choose Live chat or Submit a request via web form

Please note that according Acronis Advantage support program you can obtain support for free during 30 days after purchase. Otherwise, you should purchase the Acronis Advantage Home program for $9.99 for a 12-month subscription.

If the provided information is not clear or if you have any other question do not hesitate to post them and we will be glad to answer.

Thank you.

I was running backups with TI 2009 on XP in a few hours tops. Then moved to Win7 64-bit and TI2010 and the time went into the days for the same backup.

Made the change to the legacy driver mentioned in the link and speed is better. Running a full-backup now to see how it changes overall.

I'm using the 32-bit version of Windows 7 but this solution may apply.

I use TI 2010 to back up to a second internal hard disk. I did a full backup over the weekend that took 36 hours! I had no reason to believe there was anything wrong with that second disk, as it passed a SMART test and I'd run CHKDSK on it.

However, after the 36-hour backup, I ran a diagnostic on it using the free Seatools for Windows program, and it failed several of the tests. I replaced the disk with a brand new drive and reran the full backup.

This time, it took only 28 minutes!

It seems as if while Windows is quite forgiving of minor hard drive problems, True Image simply isn't. But it's working totally fine now with the new disk in place.

Hi, I've tried all the solutions I've found on this forum and thread, and still my backups don't work correctly. I've updated to Snap driver 503, installed achi drivers for my sata drives, upped the backup priority to high, and still nothing is working right. I have a brand new install of Win 7 x64, on a brand new machine core i7 with Raptor hard drives and 6gb ram.

As is, the product is useless. Acronis, please! A little help on an obvious bug. I should have to pay you extra for you to fix this issue since it is a legitimate, widespread issue and not isolated to my system.

Thank-you,

Mike

Mike, I feel your frustration, having gone through hours of this. Just out of curiosity - if you haven't already - download the program I mentioned above - Seatools For Windows - and run the "Short Drive Self Test". That's the one my seemingly OK drive flunked, and when I replaced the drive, Acronis suddenly sprang to life.

It would stink if a bad drive (especially a new one) was the reason Acronis wasn't working properly, but at least you'd know.

I'm having a similar problem with my Windows 7 64-bit machine and Acronis True Image Home 2011 Update 2, Build 6857. Tried installing the driver mentioned above (SnapAPI Build 503), stopped any other apps from running (including antivirus) and ran diagnostics on the disk drive (it runs clean, both with Windows Chkdisk and the native Seatools and WD diagnostics). Acronis still takes about 9 hours to back up a 250 GB WD2500AAKS-00VSA0 SATA disk to another disk (a 500 GB RAID 10 array on the same host). The drive is running in Ultra-DMA mode and there's no indication of any error.
