"Delete previous Backup Archive" not Working

Thread needs solution

I have set up several Backup jobs to backup each of my Hard Drives to an external USB drive using Incrementals. I set it to run for 7 Days, then start over (which causes one Full backup to run every 7 days followed by 6 Incrementals).

Initially my backup drive ran out of space within 2 weeks - no problem (I thought) - I will simply check the box under "Backup Method" that says says "Delete previous Backup Archive" which should cause the following to occur each week

Mon                              Tue  Wed  Thur   Fri     Sat   Sun
                        FULL Backup                        - Incr - Incr - Incr - Incr - Incr - Incr
Delete previous Backups and run FULL Backup    - Incr - Incr - Incr - Incr - Incr - Incr
Delete previous Backups and run FULL Backup    - Incr - Incr - Incr - Incr - Incr - Incr
                     etc                  etc                     etc               etc             etc

I searched the Help menu and it says:

When the Remove previous backup archive check box is selected, creation of a new full backup in accordance with the specified backup policy results in deletion of the complete old backup chain – the old full backup and its subsequent incremental (or differential) backups regardless of the overall limitations you set on the archive at the Automatic consolidation step.

But noooooo . . . . the deletion is simply not working. It runs another set of backups every 7 days but NEVER Deletes ANYTHING. I ended up with about 16 files for each drive and my backup drive full. For example for my C drive there was one FULL backup, then 6 Incrementals, then another FULL, then 6 more Incrementals, then another FULL, then 2 Incrementals which took me from 16 days ago until today. But no Backups files were ever deleted !! I tried deleting ALL backups to give it a "fresh start" - but still not working. I am wondering if it is an issue with the Backup drive being a USB drive ? I recall there is some other issue with USB drives but cannot remember what it was. Anyway is there a fix for this ?? TIA

I am having the exact same problem. Running Windows XP Home SP3, with TIH 2010, build 7154.
Can someone from Acronis address this problem please?

Acronis Mods - PLEASE PLEAS PLEASE Respond !!
This is my 3rd attempt to get a response. We need a response from Acronis since obviously no one knows how to fix this problem.
And it is a HUGE problem. Without the old archives being deleted - the backup drive fills up and then backups fail every day after that.

I experimented using a backup of a single folder and the deletions worked fine.
I also experimented with a small emulated drive (I substitued B: for a folder on my C drive) and that worked too.

But none of my Hard drives backup sets are being deleted - not EVER. Which makes this product completely useless to me since the backups fail after a week or so once the backup drive fills up.
I do go in and manually delete the old archives but I didn't pay money so that I would have to do this manually.

I have not tried this method when using external HDDs and version 2011 but it certainly works with an internal backup HDD. All I had to do was create a secure zone on the seperate backup drive. Then, hey presto, when it fills up the FIFO method of backup control kicks in. Although Acronis have, for other reasons, never recommended a SZ on an external drive this method worked with many older versions of TI. It may well cause problems with later and current versions as the data base now used for backup control and reporting may be confused if the external drive was not always connected.

The obvious workaround is to remember to delete older backup sets before all the space is used up. Not ideal but workable especially as backups to an external drive are usually started with manual input or a "run now" instruction of a scheduled backup that is not tied to a time or day.

I changed my Backups to an internal 1.5 TB drive.
SAME problem - no backup is ever deleted and the drive quickly filles up.
There is not supposed to be a need to create s Secure Zone to do this.

But I tried just to check. And the SAME problem consinued - no backup is ever deleted.

The only time I was successful was in Tests where I used a Folder Backup - that did delete the previous backup.

Hello, I use Visa – there is a lot of programmes on my C: drive so I back them up to a usb external drive.
Like the rest of you I cannot delete previous back ups.
I thought I was doing something wrong as a new user!
What must we do to address the problem?

Peter,

This is a bug with the 2011. Deletion of existing backup versions doesn't work reliably at all. The best way is to have ATI do auto-cleaning, choosing the option to keep only the X most recent version chains.
