which version of timntr.sys to use.
Yesterday when I updated my True Image, I was warned that a newer version of driver timntr.sys (Acronis Backup Archive Explorer) was already existing in my Windows driver library and I was asked if I wanted to overwrite the newer library version with the older version included in the update kit.
How a newer version of timntr.sys got onto my PC library is a mystery but it may have got there in the past when I loaded and later removed a copy of True Image bundled with a Western Digital hard drive.
The older version of timntr.sys is 4.0.0.469
The newer version is 4.0.0.598.
If the newer version of this driver is better than the older on, is it backwards compatible with a True Image kit that includes the older driver.

What version of ATi are you using? there is no reason to update that driver separately from the overall program.

Thanks for your interest in my situation.
I am using the complementary version of Ati (build 8145) that was bundled with the purchase of a Maxtor hard drive. Normally I load the minimal kit and have never had any warning messages.
But this time I decided to include the full kit. It is possible that on a previous occasion, I loaded the full kit of AtiWD (version 13.0.0.14010) which may be newer than the build 8145 associated with Maxtor. Loading a full kit may be the only way that driver timntr.sys finds its way into the driver library.
De-installing ATiWD build 13.0.0.14010 prior to installing Maxtor build 8145 may not have removed timntr.sys from the driver library and that could explain why I was warned about a newer version already present while re-loading build 8145.
Depending on which brand of hard drive I have on my PC, I like to switch back and forth between builds when making cloned copies for archival purposes.
So I am wondering how much of a difference there is between the two available versions of timntr.sys that would prompt me to try to use the newer version of the driver when using the older Maxtor ATi kit.

OK I understand. If you can explore images using Windows explorer, you shouldn't worry about the driver version.
If you are worried, you should be able to remove this driver by uninstalling the Acronis device in the computer device manager, then trying to reinstall.

Pat,
Going into the device manager and uninstalling (Maxtor MaxBlast) Image Backup Archive Explorer will not cause the Acronis driver timntr.sys to be removed from the Windows/system32/drivers library. Neither will subsequently using the control panel to remove the total package.
Given that I now have three versions of the True Image application (11.0.8145 and 13.0.0.14010 and 13.0.0.14157) which I have at one time or another installed, it does not surprise me that two versions of timntr.sys (4.0.0.469 and 4.0.0.598) have found their way into the driver library after my choosing of the "complete" setup process during a particular installation.
Thus, depending on the order in which newer or older builds replace previous installations, there may or may not be a warning about overwriting the residual version of timntr.sys present in the driver library.
I assume that Acronis Backup Archive Explorer is not involved with the cloning of a hard drive. Since my only use of True Image is to make clones of my hard drives, I never attempted to use the Backup Explorer to examine the contents of my cloned drive or incremental backup. Thus I don't know how well different versions of timntr.sys would behave when mixed with different builds.
Thanks again.

The driver is involved only when you explore an image using Windows explorer (double click) or you mount an image. If these functions are working, don't worry about this driver.

Thanks again Pat for your update.
The only way for me to determine if the newer driver functions well with an older ATI build will be for me to create an incremental backup and then explore it using the newer driver. If there won't be any issues, then it will mean that the Acronis driver is backwards compatible.
