Advantages of WinPE recovery?

Thread needs solution

What are the advantages of using a WinPE recovery environment vs. the "normal" Linux-based setup?

It uses Windows drivers which will be less problematical with new hardware, it is slightly faster (but not by much), you can if you know how combine TIH into a 'lite' OS emergency CD, that is you could make a CD that allows a number of utilities and perhaps even web access under Windows.

If you have no problems with the Linux CD, there isn't much point in using the PE version.

If creating a WinPE build with multiple "rescue" utilities, keep in mind that TIH 2012 uses a new and different registry [CurrentControlSet] set-up for its drivers and filters. In particular, the UpperFilters entries for Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and Class\{71A27CDD-812A-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F} are now "fltsrv" instead of "snapman" and the fltsrv service needs to be added accordingly.

That new arrangement is backward compatibile with some other Acronis apps (e.g., DiskDirector 2011) but not vice versa. So you'll need to ensure that it takes precedence over any previous WinPE inclusions.

In addition, if creating a 64-bit WinPE build, you need to use the version-matched fltsrv.sys, snapman.sys and snapapi.dll files from the TIH 2012 installation under your x64 Windows OS. The 32-bit files that are included in the Plus Pack (or BartPE download) won't work, of course.

Lastly, note that line 63 in the [SetupReg.AddReg] section of the BartPE acronis.inf file is NOT correct:
0x4, "ControlSet001\Services\fltsrv", "Group", "PnP Filter"
should be
0x1, "ControlSet001\Services\fltsrv", "Group", "PnP Filter"

Attempting to use 0x4 (dword) for adding a registry string will result in a fatal error and the same would apply to usage in any other WinPE builds such as WinBuilder scripts.

Thanks.

It doesn't sound like WinPE would add much for me. I've tested the Linux disk, and with luck I'll never need it again anyways.

Jerry,

I saw your other post about the AMD RAID. If you find out the Linux based doesn't see your RAID properly, WinPE will help you.

It seems to see it, but I should probably do some more extensive testing.

Thanks.

If the Linux sees your RAID like Windows does, try to recover a couple of files from your backup.
