Create a backup on FTP

Thread needs solution

Good day.
I have a constant problem with storing backups on the ftp server. Problems I had no version of ATI's 2010 now, I purchased an upgrade ATI 2011 + Plus Pack and the problem is still the same. : (: (
I have two different FTP repository. The first server to save the backup never fails. It always results in an error message "Can not create folder ftp" (see FTP log and picture).
The second server stores the backup, but ATI will automatically create a empty directory absurd
"\ myfolderbackup \" (those with forward slashes) (bug??), and logs after the backup is also an error message (see picture).

I tried other backup programs, and storing it on my ftp server was no problem, the error on the ftp server is eliminated. I'm getting a bit angry ... :( :( :(

Thank you in advance for any information or solution.
Jarda V.

Sorry for bad English (use Google Translate).

What build of 2011 are you using and what OS?

Does the rescue CD work with your servers? It should, just want to check if it is just a Windows based problem.

Are you making complete disk images?

Is Windows Routing and Remote access disabled (it should be)?

Does the FTP Server show up correctly in TIH 2011?

- Im use last build 6597, ATI 2011 PLUS PACK
- rescue CD (linux core) - create backup to FTP server, no error :)
rescue CD (WinPE) - create backup to FTP server, no error :) :)
- system Windows 7 EN
- Backup to FTP server, files only (max. 50 MB)
- service "Windows Routing and Remote access" is disabled

... that the only bug in the new interface ATI 2011 ??? :( (rescue CD use old interface ATI 2010)

Any news on this? I'm getting exaxctly the same problem, The ftp service on my NAS works fine, from the same machine I can use Filezilla to connect, navigate, create , upload, download...i.e it is NOT a problem with the NAS FTP! I notice that the last character of the FTP string is a dot - seems like ATI has not added the backup file name properly!

How are you all accessing the FTP, by IP, UNC or as a mapped share?

If the drive is mapped, try accessing via IP.

I'm accessing mine via IP address. Not sure why you differentiate "UNC" and "mapped share" since they are one and the same thing..."UNC" being the naming convention (in Windows) for mapping shares...either way, this looks like a bug in ATI. I have tried every which way to point the backup at the FTP location, every single attempt fails with "can not create folder ftp ...blah" always ending with the dot.

The clue to the fact that it IS most definitely a bug is in the message - why is it trying to create a folder??? It should be trying to create a .tib FILE in the (writable) FTP folder I have selected, and its the FILE name that is aways shown as a dot rather than the name I typed in the filename box!

I have even tried putting an existing .tib file (from an earlier b/u of the same machine) in the FTP folder - and how could I do that if he FTP wasn't working? - then clicking on the existing file, expecting a "do you want to overwite..." message -

and what I gt instead is: "can not create...." etc

BUG. The FTP backup function is broken.

Hello,

Exact same issue (Pc on win XP sp3 Pro 32).
I can browse the FTP server after adding it and select the FTP path where I want to store it.
But when I launch the backup I've the exact same error as the one in your error1.png screen shot.

I've tried to uninstall TIH 2011, go in the registry to delete acronis FTP entries as there is no option in TIH2011 do delete an FTP location.
I've tried to use the internal IP (192.168....) as well as the external name (ftp.mydomain.fr) as my router supports loopback. In both case I can browse to select the backup path but it fails after while launching the backup.
This was and is still working with TrueImage 2009...

My FTP server is a synology NAS, I cannot get FTP log files on it but I can see that true image connect.

Contacted the support yesterday and they ask me why I put a dot "." at the end, I've explained them that I did not put it and that the slash where not in the good way to me.
They asked me to contact the french support today (closed yesterday) but I don't have time to spend on something that was working in the past and don't think that my english level is too bad to be understood and helped in english.

Your English is fine! (Plus meilleur que ma Francais!)

I have got round my problem by opening up my internall firewall to allow through SMB (ports 13/7/138 UDP). Then I just use a UNC path ("\\nas\backup" in my case) and back up as per usual.

I know this isn't going to be a good solution for eyeryone (and I'm not sure it's the best solution for me!) but I need to get a backup done! I guess it boils down to which is the least exploited hole, FTP or SMB

Hello Phil,

Using samba doesn't allow to perform backups from the web (I don't use it often but it happens) and more than that I'm facing serious issues with credentials and I'm not alone in this case :
http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=162&t=28521&start=105 (barthold message)

Sorry to hear that - all my stuff is done on my own internal network, so I dont have any experience of remote backups or Synology. Bon chance!

I have exactly the same problem creating FTP backups to a QNAP TS-209. When I try to initiate the backup I get exactly the same error message as the original poster. You are not alone!

FTP is a much faster protocol the CIFS (UNC path) so I really want to use FTP - this is driving me crazy.

Does anyone have a fix to this problem?

Looking at the FTP Debug Logs there is some crazy stuff going on... like trying to open the backup filename as a directory. I really wonder if whoever wrote the FTP code actually understands how the protocol is supposed to work.

Please Acronis - what can you do to help with this?

Hello,

I wonder as well if FTP has been tested and if yes, against which FTP server... True Image Home is for Home users and I suspect (maybe I'm wrong) that Qnap and Synology are the top vendors of Home nas.

Hello all,

Thank you for your comments! I understand how inconvenient the situation is, and will do my best to help you.

(First of all, to whom it may concern, if you're backing up not to FTP, please, make sure that you're specifying the UNC path to the desired destination, as it may help to solve the problem. Please see more details in this KB article.)

Should the issue remain, please gather the following diagnostic information:

  1. Acronis Info
  2. Wireshark

and open a support request with the information attached, and let us know it's number.

Should you have any concerns or additional questions, don't hesitate to share them with us, we will b glad to help.

Thank you.

Yana, Thanks for at least replying... it is something of a step forward that someone in Acronis is finally expressing a willingness to help.

Firstly to your comment: "First of all, please, make sure that you're specifying the UNC path to the desired destination, as it may help to solve the problem. Please see more details in this KB article."

Please be clear that the problem that everyone on this thread is complaining about is using the FTP protocol. You cannot use a UNC path to describe an FTP target - so your advice is not relevent and seems to suggest that you are not familiar with the FTP protocol either.

Secondly I would be very happy to provide you with AcronisInfo and Wireshark output - I have both installed on my system - but your website tells me that the only way I can open a support case is by paying for a support subscription. Frankly I am not inclined to burn even more of my money when the problem is with the poor quality of your product. If you would like to propose some other way for me to provide this data that doesn't involve me throwing good money after bad, then I would be happy to do so.

Has there been any solutions to this problem?

I've been having the same problem with my Cisco (formerly linksys) NSS4000. I can create a backup to my LaCie NAS, but not my Cisco unit. The error message is the same as what everyone is describing in this thread. Error code 0x0004000A "can't create folder...". I used to backup to this NAS with older versions of True Image and I can't understand why this problem is still out there. It looks like they've been having this reported since last September 2010

Folks,

There is not a lot of point adding a huge list of boxes that this doesn't work with.
The problem is with the FTP code in Acronis. It won't work with ANY FTP server.

Actually, that's not true. It is working fine with my Rack Mounted LaCie Ethernet Disk on two separate PC's.

I stand corrected... but I am truly amazed that it works with any FTP server. You are clearly a lucky man :)

Something new?

I have the same problem with the latest ATIH 2011 on QNAP TS-239ProII+ !

1. Other FTP programs are working properly
2. Rescue CD works ok
3. ATIH 2011 sees the list of folders
4. The task to run error "can not create folder 0x0004000A"

I checked everything - it is a problem Acronis, not NAS!!!
How long will we wait for a solution to the problem of FTP?

Anything new? Still having the same problem and no solution from Acronis for about 5 months? Maybe someone from Acronis could tell us if the problem will be solved or if we have to live with it.

I am having the same problems... Luckily I am using the trial version, so I am still deciding on where to buy or not to buy Acronis True Image!

If there isn't going to be a solution for this, I will have to use look for a real backup tool and purchase that instead. TY.

The log shows that ATI is trying to find some email directory that doesn't appear to be there, or maybe doesn't have the access rights...

Directories are there. 100% sure.
And I am using my root account for testing, so it should have all the access it needs.

I was expected this :-)
I cannot help you much more here.

And still no answer from Acronis; not on the forums and also not by email. I cannot create a support ticket, cause I have 0 registered Acronis products, even though I tried registering my evaluation version of True Image 2011 several times... Sigh.

Maybe I should take a look at alternatives instead.

Michel,

What type of backup are you trying to make?

Are you using the French version of ATIH and what build number are you trialling?

It doesn't matter what kind of backup. It just doesn't like my NAS much apparently. It doesn't matter if I backup a partition or a file. It results in the same result.

I have downloaded the latest (evaluation version) of True Image 2011 from the Acronis website, in English.

Now this is weird... I thought about giving a complete reinstall a try. So I uninstalled True Image and checked the registry for references as well and removed them. Then removed the old directories. Redownloaded the evaluation version and tried again. And guess what? Now it works. Sheesh.

So problem solved. Gonna play some more with it and see if I bump into anything else.

On a sidenote; if I setup back schedules now and I decide to purchase True Image, will those backup schedules still be there?

You can export your tasks and re-import them. As far as I'm aware, if you decide to purchase TI2011, once you have the licence number, you can 'activate' the trial copy, there is no need to uninstall, download etc.

Ah okay. That's excellent, so I can fully configure everything and if I decide to buy, I won't be needing to redo my schedules. And thanks by the way!

Hi,

Decided to use FTP on my Readynas duo instead of the SMB protocol as I was lead to believe it was faster. Had the problems mentioned above about getting errors about Acronis not being able to create a folder when none was needed (having managed to set up FTP account and navigate to folder and select a .tib backup file). This is also described here - http://forum.acronis.com/forum/20903

I did find this Acronis article - http://kb.acronis.com/content/1843 which suggests FTP servers such as ProFTPD are not compatible, and a quick telnet check suggests Readnas duo devices use this type of FTP server!!

At the same time, Acronis informed me there was a update to the Home 2011 software I'm using (to version 6868). Last night I updated the software, and now when I try changing my backup to use FTP, it seems to allow me to do it (not coming up with the above error, and asking me to login to the FTP server), and successfully saves the backup profile. Ran out of time to actually run the backup to see what happens, but this is certainly a step ahead of what I was going. This might help others in same position, if not already discovered?

Will try a backup tonight, and hopefully this will work through...

regards,
meadwak!

It is good to hear some progress.

Frankly I have avoided downloading the recent updates for fear of breaking what I had working with CIFS.
Please post if you manage to successfully backup over FTP - then I might be prepared to risk updating too.

Thanks for the feedback!

will do!

oddly though, looking at the change log for update 6868, there is no mention of a fix for this FTP issue! Although there is something about another FTP problem, so maybe that resolved it!

either way, before i get ahead of myself, will try tonight, and let you all know...

OK, ran a backup last night, and it seemed to work OK until the end. It created 52, 2GB .tib files on the NAS drive (i think 2GB per file being the max for FTP), and then failed at the last step with the 'Pending operation 144 started: 'Saving partition structure'. Failed to open data stream. ' error that is mentioned elsewhere on forums (but can't find a specific answer other than creating backups from scratch, which i will try tonight. The files created definitely seemed to backup a lot quicker than using SMB (I have not got the logs handy, but it seemed to backup over 105GB in just over 2hrs I think).

So, the latest patch seems to fix the FTP issue but as I don't yet have a successful (completed) backup yet, I can't completely say its worked, although the error seems common from the other forum posts I could find on the subject!

Hope that helps some people, and if anyone can direct me to a definite solution for the error I'm now receiving, it would be much appreciated!
