ABR11 - Backup task takes 13 minutes, backup deletion takes nearly 5 hours?

Thread needs solution

Hello,
Why does the task "backup deletion" take nearly 5 hours, whereas the actual backup takes about 13 minutes?

The machine is on a gigabit switch with 6 other machines that all backup the same way and backup deletion doesnt take this long on those.

Are there some things to check that might cause the task "backup deletion" to take a very long time?
Also VSS is currently disabled in backup options.

LOG FILE BELOW!

Thanks.
kris

Hi Kris

What kind of retention rules do you have in place? Eg, you are keeping backups for x amount of days, or x amount of space then once that rule is met are you perhaps using the ‘consolidation’ option?

I would also suggest you edit your job and check the backup options to ensure the VSS provider is currently set to “Software – System Provider”.

Yes retention is set to 15 days on this machine.
Yes consolidation is checked.

I suspect that the deletion is taking much longer on this machine because of the size of the full backup, about 80GB, each daily incremental is about 1GB usually.

I also did some searching about similar problems in ABR11, is it better to run differential instead of incremental to avoid problems like this?

VSS is disabled and generates the same errors even if set to Software - System Provider. I have another thread about that already but i dont know if its fixed in the latest build. Since the backups have been completing I am disregarding the VSS errors for the time being. I advised the customer today that a new build is available and scheduled remote labor.

Just checked some things on remote session:
There is no consolidation option under plan type simple...
Also size of backup has grown to 135GB full with a 35GB incremental yesterday.
Reset VSS to disabled once again, that should clear up the log...it had been disabled previously, not sure why it was re-enabled.
