TI H 2011 : how do comments, how get it to auto name ds like TIH2010

Thread needs solution

Just d/l'ed tih2011 6868. interface not at all obvious - much trial and guess, but couldn't find where to put comments, and it really tries to name everything the same - makes it impossible when doing error recovery and trying to decide which backup to use.

Thoughts?

To input comments, launch ATI, click on recover/explore a specific backup task. A new window will pop up (called the backup explorer). In the timeline below, double click a version. You will see a small comics-like bubble with 3 dots. Click on this to enter your comment.

To change the name of the TIB files, click on operations, edit backup settings. Click on the destination, choose browse, double click your wayt to your desired destination. When it is opened, enter the name of the TIB file in the input box.

So I have to first create the backup, then add comments? yes... ;;

so there is no more auto name with date??? ;; yes there is when you're selecting the target folder, and it holds that for subsequent backups

"click on operations" where is that please? ;; got it

"recover/explore a specific backup task" where is that please? Oh "explore and recover". ;; got it

"double click a version" no version present on mine... ??? ;; got it - it's a comic balloon in upper right.

I just found that though I gave it a name , it NAMED it "My-Partitions" - only see-able by a 2011 ti I guess. ;; my bad for not naming it correctly. see comment below about help from Gene Barlow!

EDITED 7-23 3:33pm est

it doesn't remember the folder where I put it when I try to create the next backup.;;  yes it does - see comment about Gene Barlow below.

The folder My Backups is only meaningful when you only have only ever known about Acronis.;; so change it - my bad, ibid

I run 3 backups for safety: windows, EaseUs, and Acronis2010. "My backups" holds no meaning.  ;;  no prob see later posts.

Kris,
The 2011 interface is totally new and you will be lost for a while until you find where everything is located. Most of the old features still exist but you have will need to explore to find them.

One place to start is the "Lite user guide" along the left margin of this web page. Also check my signature below and click on the "How to's" link. Once you get to the "How to's" section, there are numerous KB articles on the various functions.

All backups are run from a task. Your task will remember and display the path to your backup folder. Comments are added to an existing task--after the fact. The "how to's" has a KB on comments.

Spend some time looking at the examples and most of your questions will be answered.

PS: When posting about your version, always refer to the 2011 version as 2011. Identify the old version 11 as version 11; This will help to prevent confusion. Different versions may need different answers.

sounds so like Vista redux. So auto name with date really doesn't exist. You are putting everything into one dataset. A very dangerous thing to do - any IT can see that. Yes, you don't have the answers, but I'm supposed to go look through lots of pages on the off chance I'll find it - you've told me that by not giving me the answer - after all, I already paid for it.

If you had read it, you'd know it's not there.  Do you get a sense of power from sending me on a useless quest? I'm 67 and have been working with computers since the IBM 7070 (1962)  .  "Oh, I'm just trying to help..."  LOL

get serious!

so terribly sorry - should have said "tih2011 6868" all better now?

Kris77 wrote:

Yes.

Yes, there is. After you have done your backup, it will show up in the backup list. You will see the blue "operations" link. Click on this, choose edit backup settings.
Click on the destination "button". A drop down will appear. Click on browse. Using the left navigation panel, double click your way until you reach the backup folder. ATI *does not* remember it (I know this is a pain). Once the folder is opened, look at the input box for the TIB name. To the right of it, you have a button to add a @date@ and or @time@ stamp to the name.
Once you have done this, click OK and verify that the destination is the one you wanted. YOu should be back to the main configuration window at this point. You can rename the task (If you use stamps with some signs in between, like a dash, your task name might look odd). Save your backup configuration.

"click on operations" where is that please?

You should see the blue link right under the explorer and recover, or recover button.

"double click a version" no version present on mine... ???

If you see a button that says "explore and recover", or a blue link that says "explorer all versions", click on it and the "backup explorer" window will open. If you only see a button that says "recover", click on it. The same window will open and you will see a square or several squares with a date/time on it arranged in a row at the bottom of that window. These are the versions.

tried that - it doesn't.

Hi Kris77,

My apologies if you did not like my response. I interpreted your request as "needing some direction for self help." Age has no bearing as I am considerably older than you. Good luck.

Kris77,

Which one did you try that doesn't? Adding the comments or the tags to the backup name?

adding a comment

I have attached a screenshot of the buttons: explore and recover (button for file backup), or explore all versions (blue link for disk backup).
The second image is the backup explorer that shows up when you click either of them.

Note the bubble with a Plus sign in the upper right. This is where you can enter your comment

To those in this thread trying to help: Grats on a ton of patience.

The most I feel inclined to help with is simply to say that dynamic filenames are allowed with the following variables: date, time, user name, machine name, task name and task run number; or any combination of these variables. Also, as mentioned above, you can also add comments to a backup chain after it is created.

Beyond that I think an apology and a more grateful attitude are in order.

Pat L - thanks - yes, I did find the little bubble - I can go in and add a comment AFTER the version is created - just wish it was available when I first create the version!

Gork - yes I did find the date and time etc additions - still am limited to putting them (versions of a particular partition) in one folder (or don't know how to change that). I use 2 or 3 backup locations for safety.

--
I played with incremental, but there seems no way to save earlier versions other than just doing full - I often find my self in a situation where I want to go back 4 or 5 backups to "start over" if a particular change proves to not be in my best interests. Also I find that WIN works best if restored to just after the first activation every 6 or 12 months. TIH2010 has worked out well for me in that way.

While playing with incremental, I did try to delete the last incremental of a version from within TIH2011 and Acronis deleted it and ab-termed with no code. Tried again and same result. Tried to delete the full (now with no incrementals) and TIH2011 hammered C: for 3 minutes and then hung. Don't know what that's all about.

Kris77,

There is a big bug in 2011 where deleting partials (incrementals or differentials) is not working reliably at all. 2011 is best left alone managing through auto-cleaning, and choosing the optioin to keep only the X most recent versions. The other autocleaning options don't work reliably either...

yup - thanks for that one Pat! I only did fulls on TIH2010 and apparently I will only be doing fulls if I continue with TIH2011 - no reason to change. I thought incrementals would be fun, but NOT. going to go see if I can easily convince it to do same partition to different folder...

later...

Okay, this is looking infinitely better - It creates a second box under My Backups in TIH2011 with my second destination, so all is very well there.  later...

An addon - credit where credit is very due - Gene Barlow of ugr.com gave me his 21 page guide and the comments in there , especially about creating the backup folders ahead of time and adding date time to the name were most helpful. Thanks!

Thank you for posting back with your solutions, as it were.

Thank you Gork - hopefully this thread will serve as an example to noobs (er olds) of "frustrated to satisfied", in some small way, and encourage them onward. Most of my confusion was in the target folder creation which was made infinitely simpler by just creating them in advance. dsn naming then became much more obvious, as did targeting the same partition to different folders - just create a new "box" in TIH2011.

I did go ahead and create multiple boxes for my 2 live partitions which was now easy. I also tested the stand alone boot media on CD and it is mostly similar to previous versions except for minor unseen changes like a new Linux kern, and an even faster boot-up. Also does an infinitely better job of finding all my .tib files which are spread all over.

I will attempt to write a 1 - page guide - you know, the one I wish I had had... LOL

And thanks to all the well meaning folks who tried to help!

Kris

Hello all,

I just wanted to let you know that we have released a hotfix for this issue.

In order to apply it please make sure you have installed build 6868.

You can check the release notes and download it here. It is available for US, UK, German and French versions.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

Do these hotfixes for ATI cause any problems for those of us who also have Plus Pack installed? I've not been able to find a corresponding Hotfix for PP.

Also, I noticed this is build 6868 Hotfix 2. I never installed Hotfix 1. Does Hotfix #2 include the changes addressed in Hotfix #1 as well? And if not, does Hotfix 2 require that Hotfix 1 be previously installed? And if Hotfix 2 does not include the changes in Hotfix 1, is Hotfix 1 still available somewhere?

Thanks.

Hello Gork,

Thank you for your question!

We have just got the most recent information from the Development team. The newly released hotfix contains updated kernel, which doesn't include the fixes to the discussed issue from the previous updates.

All hotfixes will be available in the upcoming Update 3 (U3). Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Should you have any questions - let us know, we will be glad to address them.

Thank you.

Ah, ok - that's for your reply. I can't find where I have access to hotfix #1. I thought I might install both it and #2 if I could get them both, but only hotfix #2 is available from the site. Due to this, and the fact that my question regarding whether or not applying the hotfixes will interfere with my installation of Plus Pack I guess I'll just wait for now and see what ends up happening with U3. I'm far too scared to update to 2012!

Hello all,

Thank you for your feedback.

We have just released an update for Acronis True Image 2011 Home - Update 3. It incorporates all the hotfixes that were released previously.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.
