Cloning to SSD failed and now disk is not recognized

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I tried using version 10 to clone my Xp laptop hard drive to a new SSD disk. The new SDD is connected via external USB cable. I used the manual mode to set the new partition sizes, since the SSD is larger than the original disk. I kept all partitions, just resized the primary windows partition.

There was 1 error in reading a sector reported during the clone which I ignored to keep the process running. I subsequently went back and ran checkdisk on the original HDD to try and fix the errors.

When I go back into Acronis to try and repeat the clone, Acronis does not see the disk. Windows does, but says it is not formatted.

What do I need to do to reclone the drive? reformat the SDD?

thanks in advance for any guidance

When you boot on the Acronis recovery CD, you can choose "add new disk" and point ATI at the SSD. This will clean it. Alternatively, from Windows, you can launch a command prompt as an administrator, then type:
diskpart
list disk
select disk X where X is the number corresponding to your SSD
clean (this will erase everthing on the disk you selected. Make sure this is the disk you want to reset).

To do the clone, it is better to put your SSD in place where it will be and move your old disk to the USB cable, then boot on the Acronis recovery CD to do the clone.

Remember to leave a 1MB space before the first partition on the SSD to align the disk.
