Another problem with restoring backup images
I am using Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 (32 bit). Have 3 500GB HDD which are all identical and are SATA II, Intel Quad processor, Explorer 8 and 2 identical SATA Optical Disks. I have an internal Rack for HDDs and two Caddies. I have a HDD installed in each Caddy and the third HDD is installed internally inside the computer. There isn’t any USB device being used. I am using Acronis True Image Home 2009, build 9796.
My problem is that when I do a restore, somehow a new FullBackup image archive is created and if I am not very careful it is possible to restore the wrong archive. This wrong archive will have the correct date, but it will be a copy of an archive created several days earlier. See attachment 10-21-2009 10-33-57 AM . All my restores are accomplished using the Rescue Boot CD.
All of my backups are Full Disk images and they are created at 04:00 AM every day. All my backups are scheduled using the method described by Vlad V here, http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=228046
My FullBackups are scheduled to create 7 backups and when the eighth backup is made the oldest one is deleted, leaving me with 7 FullBackups at all times, after the initial set. In some of the screen captures shown below I refer to the “Log Count Steps = a value. This is an indication of how many steps were used by the program to create the scheduled task. See attachment (Log Count Steps = 17 10-6-2009 8-57-00 AM ).
When the schedule is first started the first 7 backups will show as Green on the calendar and after that they should all be Red, provided there are no glitches.
Below I will outline a recent problem. Disk 1 will be the HDD that was in the rack during the night, the other HDD was in its caddy, waiting to be used for the next restore, I’ll call it Disk 2
On the morning of 10/21/09 I opened Acronis TI and Disk 1 was in the computer. When I opened Acronis I went to the Task and Event Log checked to see how many Steps were used for the Backup (see attachment 10-21-2009 11-11-25 AM) I then went to Select backup to restore or manage” and clicked on Browse for location and found an extra FullBackup2 for this date (see attachment 10-21-2009 10-33-57 AM). If I didn’t Browse for location it showed I had 7 FullBackups, all in chronological order (see attachment 10-21-2009 10-54-10). Then I validated the FullBackup2(22) in Windows and using the Rescue Boot CD.
I shut down the computer and took Disk 1 out and inserted Disk 2. Then, using the Rescue Boot CD, I started a Restore operation. When asked which image to restore, I went to Browse for Location and found that there were two FullBackup2 created on 10/21/2009 (see attachment 10-21-2009 1-08-00 PM Disk2). It seems to me that changing from one disk to the other, always causes this situation of going back to an earlier archive and placing the current date on this old image (see attachment 10-21-2009 2-47-48 PM Disk 2).
After I created the Restore, using FullBackup2(22) as the backup image, I shutdown and then reopened ATI in Windows. I then looked at the Tasks and event log and found there were only 11 steps in the Log Count Steps (see attachment 10-21-2009 1-50-44 PM Disk 2). Also, still in Windows, I went to Select backup to restore or manage and it shows that FullBackup2(22) was created on 10/21/2009 (see attachment 10-21-2009 1-25-30 PM Disk 2).
Today, 10/22/2009, using the restored image created yesterday, I went to My backups, in Windows, found that the FullBackup2(22) that was created yesterday is GONE and in its place a new FullBackup2(22) is there with today’s date on it (see attachment 10-22-2009 7-50-04 AM).
I am submitting this because a lot of things have occurred here that I don’t understand. If I have a better understanding of what ATI is doing, and why, it helps me feel more confident in using it.
I will appreciate anyone’s views on these perceived, by me, problems. I would be especially interested in what the following have to say, Faust, xpilot, jehosophat and seekforever, because they either use the Rack and Caddy system for swapping HDD, or they do, or use to, use the method described by Vlad V. A lot of people on this forum and the Wilders forum have helped me in the past and I appreciate the effort of everyone. As a matter of fact, the problems I have had have always been solved on these forums, and not from Acronis tech support.

Dmitry,
I updated Acronis Scheduler when I was using build 9707 and it caused me all kind of problems. I had to go back to a restore point to stabilize everything.
I am curious as to why you think I have a scheduling problem. Here are things that I’m referring to.
1. I have the problem when doing a Restore, there is no scheduled task involved.
2. All of my Full Backups validate in Windows and using the Rescue Boot CD.
3. The problem occurs when I swap my source HDD to my other HDD, no scheduling involved.
4. The creation of another Full Backup on the same date happens without any input from me,
and happens when using the Rescue Boot CD, and no schedule is involved.
If you can explain to me how updating Acronis Scheduler is related to these non-scheduled events, I may be encouraged to take a chance and try it again, but I really think this is just a trial balloon.
