Have a hard time restoring a 2012 Universal backup windows 7 Ultimate

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I have an HP Envy laptop that did a full backup of and am  attempting to restore using Universal restor to a Dell XPS 15 z.  The backup was made on 1/25/12 and has the following partitions  ( ignore the unchecked SYSTEM reserved, it was done, I just went back to capture the screen)

I have created the same partitions on the Dell XPS 15 z, however the disk is a little larger so I increased the size of drive c.

The restore process reported restoring succesfully, upon examination of the new disk, the system reserved partition was given the label "C" and my usual "C" drive was D, and my usual D drive was E. I don't know how to force the system reserved partition to not be labelled as "c"

At reeboot, I get the windows loading and then a BSOD, I rebooted in safe mode without networking and the BSOD occurs as the driver CLASSPNP.SYS is loaded. 

I did a successful disimilar hardware restore a few years back with 2010 and hoped it would be as seamless with 2012.

Any help would be appreciated as I don' want to have to rebuilt the new machine with every piece of software, my current backup is very clean as I had rebuilt the original laptop a couple of months ago.

If the hidden partiton is labeled "C:", then it's not hidden and marked as it was on the original hdisk. It shouldn't have a drive letter assigned while booted up in windows

Aslo, note that, while you are using the restore program, partitions might not have the same drive letter assignments as they did under windows. This is becasue the resotre program OS doesn't assign drive letters inthe same order as does Windows. Don't worry about that but don't be confused either. Use volume names or disk ID to distinguish which partition is which.

Try the restore again but this time don't check the MBR box -- this will let you restore one partition at a time and control placement and size of each partition. Put them in the same location on the new hdisk as on the old--e/g. if a partition was ata th start before, put it at the start on the new hdisk--if at the ned then put it at the ned of the new hdisk. Also make any hidden partitions the same size as originals.

Then as a last step, restore the Track0/MBR.

Note that the hidden 100mb parition MUST be marked as the active partition. On machine bootup, the track0/mbr boostrap will pass machine control over to that partition (the active partition), which contains the boot manager, which will then load up the OS.

Thanks, I've successfully restored and it does appear to try to boot from the correct partition, windows starts but blue screens on classpnp.sys , I could not get restore to find the drivers during restore, it asked for about 3 drivers , is here a way for me to figure out what drivers it needs before I restore again ? I guess it does some sort if analysis to determine what drivers to install, wondered if here was a way to do that.

The last driver it asked me for was :

\VEN_1033&DEV_0194&SUBSYS_0461028&REV_04 for windows 7.

I have no idea what or where this driver is, I have the windows 7 ultimate Disk in the drive but it does not appear to be able to locate this driver

I'm only guessing but I think this is a pci driver. See if you can point to or include the pci driver that you have.

As a general matter, you want to have available drivers for all the hardware ;you have installed, so if you've added any cards, e.g., you want to have the driver for those cards too. If you added a harddrive or video card of some sort, you want the drive for that card.

its a laptop so I haven't added any cards/features. As recap Im restoring a HP Envy laptop to a Dell XPS laptop using universal restore.

I am currently copying the original factory image's windows folder to a removable disk so during a repeat restore it can be pointed to something like h:\original-factory-files\windows

should that resolve the issue since it would have the original windows folder to look at for drivers, or do I need to download all the drivers for this laptop from dell and somehow unzip them so the restore can see them? It would be great if there was some way I could figure out what drivers are needed,

I downloaded every dell driver for the XPS 15z, unzipped and made them accessible to the recovery process.

It recovered and did not ask me for any drivers ( so it looked like it worked) but on windows boot it bluescreens at CLASSPNP.SYS.

I'm pretty much at the end of my patience unless someone else has ideas... I never had this issue with acronis true image 2010 & 11, basically the Universal recovery add on is useless for this occasion, unless someone has an idea why classPNP.sys causes the bluescreen

I'm pretty frustrated at this point :)

If I understand correctly, you have an HP image that you are trying to recover, you have recovered to a Dell and trying to boot it, is that correct?

Apart from any other issues, the hardware list in registry and drivers is going to be incorrect, so Windows as you've found won't boot.

First do the two PC's have the same CPU manufacturer - that is are they both Intel or AMD?

You will need to use the Plus Pack to add in all the Dell drivers.

Windows will decide it is a new install and will require activation, as with OEM machines the product ID is often tied to BIOS and sometimes a special ID chip on the motherboard.

What OS are you using?

  • I am using plus pack with universal restore (2012 edition, just upgraded in december and up-to-date)
  • Both machines have Intel i7 CPU's
  • The HP has a Q720 1.60 Ghz  with 10Gigs of RAM, and Runs windows 7 Ultimate SP 1 64 bit
  • The Dell has a i7 2640M 2.8Ghz with 8 gigs of ram
  • What I did :  
  • I backed up the HP's entire hard disk to a backup file ( system reserved partition, windows partition, "work" partition and MBR) on jan 25th using acronis 2012/plus pack I don't remember having to do any special type of backup just a regular "whole disk" backup, I seem to remember older versions of acronis required you to select a "universal backup" but didn't see that in 2012.  
  • I created a bootable USB stick
  • I created a disk with all the dell drivers
  • I booted the dell with the USB stick I created partitions that matched the HP backup on the Dell including order on the disk and size I selected univeral restore of the HP backup to the dell,
  • Added my USB stick drivers folder to the search path
    The partitions where restored ( I can see the disk / files and it all looks good, system reserved is primary/active, c is primary, d is primary - exactly like HP DISK)
  • Whatever drivers plus pack needed seem to install ( saw activity light on my USB stick towards the end of the restore)
  • Got the message dialog "Restore completed succcesfully"
  • Exited Acronis, machine rebooted, windows logo appeared, BSOD
  • I rebooted again and hit F8 to go into save mode, selected safe mode with command prompt and when CLASSPNP.SYS was displayed BSOD again..

I pray you have some bright ideas :)

When you attempt to boot the 'new' PC are you able to use F8 to get into safe mode?

Do you have access to either a Windows 7 install DVD or a Windows 7 Recovery CD?

You do realise that what you are trying to do, isn't envisaged or encouraged by Microsoft, so there are likely to be some bumps with this.

Did the Dell run Windows 7 as well and if so the same type of install, that is Home,Pro,Ult?

You've run scannow /f ?

I'm guessing that either the driver file became corrupted or the ati2012 installation has mucked up your drivers. In which case, if you get this fixed, you might want to remove ati2012 and put ati2011 back on your machine.

To answer questions

I am able to start safe mode, but still bluescreens when loadin classpnp.sys during bootup, so I never get to "windows"

The comment about not encouraged by microsoft, I'm ok with bumps, but if its doesn't work, why does acronis market and sell a universal restore product ?

Scott - can't do a scannow /f since I can't get into a comand prompt. you point on 2011 isn't a bad one, that version actually worked :)

For not I've abandoned this, the whole reason I wanted the universal restore was to save me the 2 days it takes to re-install all my software ( I run an agency doing mobile, web, creative etc), but I've lost about that messing around with a product that doesn't work :)

I think the pure back/re-image is fine, I just restored the DELL to its factory install using the image I took before starting this, but universal restore is currently flawed.

You'd need a bare bones windows disk to run scannow.

Maybe "universal" is too broad a term ;)

Thanks Scott, just a bummer has honestly I took my old windows 7 laptop and restored it to my desktop in early 2011 and it worked like a champ, didn't need to pre-install drivers, no messing around with partitions, it was literally fire and forget, new version 2012 feels like partition magic after a few beers... :)

Well, a few more and you'll feel fine about it, at least until morning. . .

So I opened this case with Acronis support on 2/3, just got a reply 2/11 and the reply was a link on how to use universal restore... what a joke... guess I need to look for a new backup product.

I've just received a new Lenovo laptop and in their blurb I've discovered that the EUFI BIOS and hardware has built in serial numbers that Windows locks itself to. I'm wondering if perhaps Dell, HP have the same mechanism and this is perhaps a cause of your BSOD when restoring the 'wrong' image to a machine.

Naturally if you are using a vanilla version of Windows rather than the OEM product, this wouldn't be a possible cause.
