3 partitions?
I bought a Toshiba laptop and it has 3 partitions, the first partition says 1.46 GB Healthy (Active recovery partition) 2. C: partition which says “Healthy (Boot, page file, crash dump, Primary partition) and the last partition say 15 GB Health (primary partition). I don't think the last partition means anything but I'm not sure how to back these up. It sounds like I need the first 2 partitions for a backup but I've never seen this before. Also Acronis ask for updates which I'm not sure if I should except or not and if they would do any good or not and if so what?

I have the 2010 version so I should buy the 2012 version? I backup up my other laptop with this 2010 version and it wouldn't restore it.

While the 2010 version has different features, it can do the same backups and restores. As 2010 is no longer under development, it is a static product and is lacking in newer drivers.
Have you posted your issues with 2010? Are you sure your issues cannot be solved?
if you have a disk option backup, it is best restored when booted from the TI bootable media CD.

I have 3 computers with Windows 7 so it might be a good idea to buy the 2012 because my XP laptop won't restore. Also at home do I need a license for all 3 computers since it's at home and it's for personal use only?

Richard,
Regarding your XP laptop, did you try my suggestion that I posted in that link--which is below

There is no reason to believe that 2012 would do a better job of restoring than the 2010 is doing. Either there is something wrong with the TI-CD or the backup or the procedures or the disk. One step would be to boot the CD and validate the backup being used from the CD.
The rules are 1 computer per license so would need a family pack of 3 for 3 computers but you could use the less expensive update rather than the completely new license.
HOWEVER, if you do switch to a different version, be sure you do a backup of each computer being switched so that you can recover back to where you are should you either not like or have problems with the version.
