Advice/experience on "duplicating" desktop to laptop please

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I am ready to turn my Acer laptop into a “duplicate” of my Dell desktop. Acronis 2012 with plus pack is installed on the desktop (OS = Windows 7 HP, 32-bit).

I have licences to run all the software concerned on the laptop. I have the drivers for the laptop controller. I have a bootable rescue disk. I will have a full disk image.

I have run checks on the hard disks of the laptop and the desktop (both fault free). Both machines are less than four years old. The OS on the laptop is Windows 7 HP, 64-bit (I know this should be irrelevant).

I believe there are a few ways of trying to achieve what I want (clone vs restore, etc.). I have read the Acronis manual and http://kb.acronis.com/content/23561. I know that professionals have told me there is still no guarantee of success when trying to “restore” to dissimilar hardware.

What have you found to be: a) important, b) the method most likely to succeed?

Most grateful for any input,
K

Crowsong,

You have to:
- create a full disk and partition backup,
- produce a recovery CD after the Plus Pack has been installed,
- boot the laptop on the recovery CD and use the Universal Restore feature. All disk controllers and chipset drivers for the laptop need to be available in their .INF format (no .exe) during the restore.

Thanks Pat L - That was the route I was going. I know it should be straight forward. However, once bitten, twice shy.
