The last backup has been cancelled by user
Hi,
I keep getting the error message in the title. However, it does not happen all the time. On checking the log, it seems to be during validation. The problem is that ATIH2012 runs at night and, when the problem happens, I wake up to a failed backup.
If I then start a backup while I am present, when it fails I am presented with a fail message that gives me the opportunity to try again. It normally works the second time.
For the moment, I have stopped validation on making a backup and have set it to validate one day a week when I will be at the computer.
However, I would like to return to validating immediately after a backup is made. Both of my disks are fine and show no problems with the SMART values. The log gives me no clue as to what the real problem is (although that may be because I don't understand the log).
Where do I look next, please?

It's a bug in ati2012; it times itself out when various kinds of events occur and either quits (which generates the user canceled message/log entry (for some reason they've never updated the code to correct the message), or hangs.
Iirc, you can set optins so that ati ignores errors, in which case it should proceed instead of quit. But I'm guessing that you already have it confugred that way and it's quiting anyhow.
In that case, if you're within the 30 days for service at not additional charge, contact Chat and see if they can help.

Thank you very much for your help, guys.
I have changes the timeout settings to 60 minutes to see if that helps. Part of my problem may be that I don't understand the log files. However, the failure always seems to be at the same point in the backup (always during the validation) so I attach a copy of the log file in the hope someone can make sense of them for me.
I have also now found the setting to ignore error messages so will try that as well.

Don't feel bad, the log can be inscrutable except to the experts at Acronis -- but the log can point in one direction or another if a prob occurs and be helpful that way.

Thank you, Scott. In that case I hope someone can interpret the above attachment for me.

Update:
Last night it ran with the changes I had made to the settings. I received a notification saying it had failed. However, when I opened ATIH, the backup was shown as having completed successfully and validated.
So, changing the settings seems to have worked (unless it fails on a subsequent backup) but the notification does not seem to be made when properly validated, rather at the initial fail. Is there any way of overcoming that, please?

Hello everyone,
Thank you for posting and thank you for your help Grover and Scott.
Howard, I checked the log file and it appears that validation fails due to insufficient system resources on your machine, this is the most likely cause.
Please disable validation for this backup and run it again. Could you also get back to me with Acronis True Image 2012 System report so that I can check additional logs.
Let me know if you have additional questions please.
Thank you.

Hi Anton,
I am a little bit puzzled about the system resource problem as I have an advanced motherboard, a quad core CPU and 4gig of RAM (on Windows XP, although that will shortly be upgraded to Windows 7). I have previously tried disabling validation and that worked fine.
I have attached a system report and I hope that reveals the problem.
Regards
Howard

Howard,
Curious. What is the backup target? network, ftp, etc.

Hi GroverH,
It is a second internal hard drive in the same computer so no connection considerations. Both hard drives are constantly having their SMART values monitored and both are in top condition.

Jean,
TrueImage issues an info or error Window and the user needs to respond to the request.
When the program gets no response from the user, the backup is marked as cancelled by the user.
Check the log file to gain more details about what the error was. It could have been a full disk or it could have been that it could not find the prior backup file. The log can help.

The programmer cut corners here, possibly forced to by the marketing folks, and instead of coding a correct error message, the program just uses a diff one albeit incorrect. Even though the message is just plain wrong (you know that you didn't cancel the operation), it is the error message generated when the program cancels an operation in certain situations. So you have to ignore the user part and just read it as "canceled operation," which only tells you that something went wrong. Think of it like the Oil light on car dashboards-- all it says is that there's no oil pressure for whatever reason (something wrong happened) and it's too late to do something about the cause, the flow has stopped.
Error-handling is one of the most demanding parts of writing code but the area where corners are often cut because, the cuts aren't seen as often as, say, the results of interface coding. As we used to say back in the shop, "You spend the first 90% of allotted programming time on the basic-function code and another 90% on the error handling, and the third on debugging." More often this gets cut to 90%, 5%, and 5%.
