Acronis dont delete old Backups

Thread needs solution

Ive got a Problem. I Use Acronis 11.5 + 11 at the different places and at Every System i've got the Same Problem. Acronis doesnt delete automaticly old Backups. I tried 2 ways to delete old Backups. But both doesn't work. Can anyone help me?

There are 3 different installations:
1. Acronis 11.5 Build 11.5.32256 installed on Windows 2003 Standard Edition. The Backup files stored at a Nas system.

2. Acronis 11 Build 11.0.17440 installed on a Windows 2008 R2 Standard Server. The Backup files stored at a Nas system.

3. Acronis 11.5 Build 11.5.32256 Installed on Windows 2008 R2 Standard Server. The Backup files stored at a Nas system.

At all the 3 Installation the Backup can't delete the Old Backup files. I tried to delete if there is not enougt space or tried to delete Backups they are older than 30 Days or something else. Nothing works?!? What can i do?

Are all conditions met, e.g. if you chose to retain old backup until all dependencies can be deleted, but only create incremental backups after initial full - they will never be deleted?
Does the cleanup task work properly if you run it manually from 'backup plans'->'run' toolbar item?

Yes all conditions are met. If space is full. Or Backups older than 30 Days. I had to try it. Because at the moments there is enough space.

Hi DST,

I think Fedor's suggestion of manually running the cleanup task to see the result is a good idea and place to start... Once the cleanup task has run you can check the logs for that job to try and see what might be happening.

Also if you are running something like a custom backup scheme please try to edit your backup job and check for the "Apply retention rules" field located under "How to backup" section to ensure an option is selected such as: "Before backup", "After backup", "On schedule"...

Some older versions of Acronis did not automatically make a selection for you and we found many customers did not realise they had to manually check an option in this field which caused clean up issues... The latest builds of Acronis now default to

Also it would be great to know how the backup jobs are setup for example:

What to backup: Disk/volume backup (Drive C and D)
Where to backup: NAS (network share to personal vault)
How to backup: Custom backup scheme of weekly full, daily incremental's
Clean up every 30 days (delete the oldest backups) with retention rules applied before backups
Plan parameters: Error handling (Do not show messages and dialogs while processing - silent mode)
Task Failure handling: Restart a failed task (1 time between 1 hour attempt)

If you could also provide a screenshot of your vault showing all your backup types that could be of help.

On a side note: Please also make sure no one is manually accessing the NAS and via say windows explorer or NAS interface (for example) and then moving backup files, duplicating or deleting any of them if this has been done it could be the source of the issues as well as if most backup software does not 'see' what it expects to see when trying to perform a cleanup task it will by default NOT remove backups if it is not 100% sure... If manual deletions have been done you might need to get Acronis internal database back in sync with your file structure before cleanup tasks start working again as expected. (let us know if this has occurred)

I think it can be happens that someone has manually delete Backup files, because the Error exisits that Acronis doesnt delete the Files automaticly. So please Tell me how i can Sync the Database.

Hi DST,

Thanks for the reply, what you can try and do is load up the Management console, browse your vault that is having issues and then manually clean up (delete) any missing backups listed in Acronis that do not exist on your HDD...

After this I would also suggest running a clean up task just to be sure. (Perhaps Acronis can help with an official process but this has seemed to work just fine for us in the past).

Also make note for others in the office if any backups need to be manually deleted/removed please ensure it's done via the Acronis management Console as this will ensure it will not break your backups...

If you can set permissions for your backup destination for limited access to others that also can help avoid others removing backups they should not be..etc..

Hope it helps

I have older backups that don't show up in the backup and recovery tab, so I can't delete them through Acronis. Any ideas?

I haven't been able to find a manual cleanup process.

Hi Jon,
can you please clarify which Acronis product you use?
Thank you.
