Cannot delete old backups

Thread needs solution

I have 6 workstations being backed up to an AMS. I use a centralized vault with 2 vaults, each a 3Tb hard drive.  The drives are full and I cannot delte the old backups.

   My backup plans have a retention policy that doesn't seem to clear out old backups.

   I have gone into the vault and selected a backup archive. I then click "Delete" and the "Select the backup or archives to delte".  I choose one and hit delete selected.  The "View details of Activity Deleting  backup" box opens and hows it is running, but it never completes.

  I have left it run for 12 hrs before and it never completes.  My problem is that my hard drive is full and I can't make any new backups without clearning some of the old ones out.

   I have tried rebooting my AMS machine but it didn't change anything.  My AMS box is running Win7 SP1, 64 bit, with 8G of Ram.

  Please help me remove my old backups, so I can create new ones.

Thank you

Hello Robert,

Welcome to Acronis forum! Could you please provide us with more details on the issue. We would ask you for the following information:

  • screenshot from the vault (archive view) and type of the vault (centralized managed, unmanaged or personal)
  • screenshots of the settings in the related backup plan
  • Could you check if there are some errors in the log (rights click on the backup plan -> Log - > Events). Please post the full error message if any comes during clean up operation.

Thank you,

Here is my vault:

Its managed by my host named Backup. I have 2 vaults, Backup 3 and Backup Drive.  I have multiple full backups, so I would like to delete the old ones, but nothing happens when I try to delete them.

Here is my current activities:

As you can see, some of my "Deleting backups" have been running for days.  I have tried rebooting, but that doesn't help.  I have just selected a single backup, then clicked Delete and this is where it sits.

Here is a typical backup policy, including the retention policy.  I haven't even worried about it automatically deleting old backups, since I can't even get it to delete them manually.

Please let me know what I need to do to delete these old backups. My current machines can no longer run backups, so I am feeling very unprotected right now.

Hello Robert,

I've checked the screenshots - according to your clean up policy the oldest backups have to be deleted as soon as the number of backups in the archive exceeds 8 (MainStudio plan). In the vault view we see, that the number of backups in the MainStudioarchive is 6 -> condition is not met. I would also suggest the following:

  • reboot ASN service - as we have centralized managed vaults all operations with the vaults are performed by Acronis Storage Node;
  • try to delete one backup manually in the archive view - in this case the clean up task is performed by AMS, so we could check whether the issue is related to Acronis Storage Node or not;
  • check logs for errors;

Thank you,

 I'm using Acronis Backup 12.5 and doing some backup pointing to a folder in the format of Storage Node.

The backup is done and cataloged perfectly, but since I was testing this functionality I ended up deleting the backup. The backup has been deleted by the Acronis tool itself, but the disk space is not released at the location where the backup is stored.

What can I do to use the Storage Node functionality in the productive environment without the volume being stuck after deleting some backups?

Thank you.
