Retention Rule Clarification

Thread needs solution

My scenario example:

My existing backup archives:

Full-1
Incremental-1-1
Incremental-1-2
Incremental-1-3
Incremental-1-4

Full-2
Incremental-2-1
Incremental-2-2
Incremental-2-3
Incremental-2-4

Full-3
Incremental-3-1
Incremental-3-2
Incremental-3-3
Incremental-3-4

If I select "[x] Number of backups in the archive exceeds: 2" as my retention rule, what will be deleted?

What will be left after the retention rule ran?

Thanks,
Bob

Hello Bobby,

Welcome to Acronis user forums! In your example with the given setting we'll get the following outcome: as incremental backups depend on each other and their base full backup, the software will only remove them once a new full backup has been created. This will look like:

Full-1 created
Incremental-1-1 created
Incremental-1-3 created -> number of backups in the archive exceeds 2, but as they are dependent the software will only mark them for deletion (backups will get a Recycle Bin icon)

Incremental-1-3 - marked for deletion
Incremental-1-4 - marked for deletion

Full-2 - created and finally all marked for deletion backups are being removed

If you want to delete incremental (differential) backups according to the actual cleanup rules, you may want to use Consolidation option which allows to overcome this limitation (see Deleting or moving backups with dependencies)

Thank you,
