Cannot copy the disk because the available size of the target is less then the required size
Hi,
I'm trying to recover a backup on a smaller drive than original. I get the error in the subject line.
Details:
- I am trying to recover using Acronis 11.7 bootable media.
- Recovered data is whole disk, Windows 10, 950GB SSD. When browsing through the archives, Acronis says Occupied space 63.9GB, Backed up data 107GB.
- New disk is same device, but 238.5GB SSD.
The error says I need 0.4GB more than what is available (says I need 238.9GB)
I also tried to recover to a 500GB SSD. I get the same error but this time says I need 500.5GB.
Thanks,
Julien

Hi Maria,
Thanks for your fast answer. Below some pictures. Note that I'm used to Acronis (as a basic backup restore user). We have a lot of computers and I can restore our Windows 7 computers with no issues. Seems to be Windows 10 I can't restore.
Best,
Julien

Hi Maria,
I found a way around the issue after trying many things. It's not great but it worked:
- I created the same number of partitions on the new computer, with same file systems and cluster size. I marked the volume where I would copy the system as active. For some reason, I cannot choose the partitions letter (the drop down does not offer any option), so the volume letters end up different than the original (G, H, etc. as opposed to C, D, etc.).
- I recovered all the volumes (as opposed to trying to recover the disk).
- When starting I get an error (attached).
- I restarted with Windows 10 USB and ran Windows startup repair utility. It fixed the startup problem.
Restarted the computer, all fine.
However, the people who normally operate the systems are not very computer savvy, so it would be great if I could find an easier way.
Thank you
Best,
Julien

Hello Julien.
Thank you for sharing the details.
Yes, any file system/disk error makes Acronis unable to resize disks during restore. That is why it does not let you restore to a smaller disk. The workaround is restoring separate volumes, not the entire disks:

Thanks Maria,
I haven't had any warnings while backing up so I thought the disk was fine.
I'll check again.
Best,
Julien
