Backup and Recovery 11.5 Backup fails with Read error

Thread needs solution

Hi,

i am trying to backup a Harddisk and the Backup fails for one partition, it reports a Read Error. My first guess is a HDD Problem, but before running a file system check which takes the HDD offline for that time, I wanted to ask if someone had a similar error and has some ideas on which areas I should concentrate.

Thanks Martin

Hello MartinS,

welcome to Acronis forums!

You are right, this is definitely a HDD problem. We suggest that you run chkdsk without any parameters for the disk in question if do not want that HDD to be offline. When used without parameters, chkdsk displays only the status of the volume and does not check for bad blocks but checks your file system.

Hi MartinS

I have run into this problem too and discovered, can't remember where, that if you change the amount of space available for VSS it seems to solve the problem. It worked for me on a server and has also worked for me on a workstation using True Image home.
You don't need to turn on VSS just change the amount of space available to it.

Steps I followed on 2008 R2 Server:

Right click the disk drive in windows explorer, go to Shadow Copies tab. Highlight the disk drive, click Settings. Click the No limit radio button. Click OK.
Repeat for any other disks included in your backup. (Remember to do it for the unlabeled \\?\Volume system partition too).
Shadow Copies is still Disabled on all these drives/partitions.

Seemed to work for me.
Hope it helps someone else too.

Selwyn
