Performance issues when backing up Hyper-V cluster

Thread needs solution

Hi,

We have two Server 2008 R2 servers in a Hyper-V cluster, with five VMs stored on iSCSI targets from a NAS device. There are no performance issues on the VMs during normal usage, but when running backups performance becomes very slow, and the backup job itself takes a very long time - the total job is around 2TB to a SAS-connected HP Ultrium 5 tape drive and takes anywhere from 8 to 15 hours. As the business is a 24/7 operation we cannot afford for performance to be this slow for such a long time, so would like advice on improving the backup performance.

Currently one of the Hyper-V hosts is acting as the Acronis Management Server, with the agent deployed to the other host and each of the VMs, and we have a single job to backup the two hosts and each of the VMs in the cluster. Is there a better way of doing this that would improve performance? Remember that the VM storage is on iSCSI targets from a NAS device.

Thanks.

Hi Kev,

First of all it makes sense to try tunning the simultaneous backup setting (which defines how many VMs are processed simultaneously) for the backup task and try reducing this number or try running a backup of one VM at a time and then check the performance. In any case it makes sense to contact our support team for assistance. Please clarify which exact process is consuming most CPU/RAM resources during backup + attach the logs (including Windows Event logs), so that we can troubleshoot the problem thoroughly.

Thank you.
