Unable to build PE 6.0 (Win10) media with 11.7 44397 or 44409

Thread needs solution

What "specific" version of the ADK is the media builder looking for?  There are only two and I've tried both.  The option is disabled - apparently because it can't find it.

This is the situation I'm in now:

I'm running Windows 10 Enterprise 64bit.

Acronis Backup Advanced for PC 11.7 44409 installed and working fine. I can create a Linux bootable media, but I get "greyed out" option for the WinPE environment, even if I have the Win10 PE correctly installed and working just fine.

Now, I installed my Acronis Disk Director 12.

Both from Disk Director and from ABA 11.7 44409, I can create the Linux bootable media, and have both ABA 11.7 and DD12 on the pendrive, both 32b and 64b...great!

BUT: I now try to make a WinPE bootable media, tried from both programs... this time it actually goes ahead and I can create the ISO.

I then made a bootable USB drive from the ISO using Rufus... it runs!

BUT ONLY DISK DIRECTOR IS PRESENT.

Now, how is this supposed to work? How am I supposed to ever get a ABA 11.7 WinPE image?

Is DD 12 incompatible with ABA 11.7 44409?

Is this normal behavior? If they are un-compatible with each other (which makes NO sense whatsoever), shouldn't I receive a warning when I try to install DD12 after ABA 11.7?

Is it possible that creating a working WinPE bootable media should be this difficult and problematic?

THIS SHOULD JUST WORK.

Sorry for the rant, I hope someone can help me figure out what is going on here.

It seems the time has passed that Acronis is allowing/supporting placing multiple products on WinPE media.  No too surprising as I've elaborated in prior posts.

It's still possible and they co-exists just fine.  The process to achieve the pair on a single PE media is just not as easy as it used to be.

I've opened a support ticket for the Win 10 PE issue.  Possible that is was not intended to be supported yet but the Media Builder team didn't know that or just listed all known PE versions on the dialog by mistake.  It does still work with WinPE 5.0 (Win 8.1).

I see a compatibility problem between the media builders for DD12 and AB 11.7 build 44409. I installed AB 11.7 build 44409 on a Win10 Ent 64 bit system that had an existing install of DD12. This system had both the 8.1 and 10 ADK's installed. I ran the media builder for AB 11.7 and requested WinPE. Acronis automatically created the WinPE. When I booted it, I got only DD12 as reported above. I did not check which ADK had beed used to create the WinPE.

My next step was to uninstall DD12 and reinstall AB 11.7. This time the WinPE created by AB 11.7 was based on the 8.1 ADK and AB 11.7 ran. I was able to see my NVMe drive in AB 11.7. I didn't test creating the WinPE with only the Windows 10 ADK installed as above posts have proved the Windows 10 ADK does not work with AB 11.7.

My best advice is to remove DD12 from the system, reinstall AB 11.7 and install the Windows 8.1 ADK. I know the Windows 8 ADK does not have built in driver support for NVMe drives.

Thanks Mustang, I guess I'll just have to go through all that again... I didn't mention it in my post, but I went through huge problems win ABA 11.5 and DD 12, and just two weeks ago I did a full un-install of both products and then went for a clean 11.7 install.

I guess I just shot myself in the foot installing DD 12 again. Live and learn.

But really... it should NOT be this way. A backup solution has only two main things to do: 1. Make relable backups. 2. Make a reliable energency boot enviorment so I can get my system back if a true disaster should arise.

To say that I am disappointed is a big understatement, I want this fixed!

Just to be safe, after you uninstall DD12, you should delete the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Acronis\MediaBuilder before installing AB 11.7.

hehe... since I installed DD 12 only today, I just restored my main c:\ drive from last nights backup, all good, no more DD 12, and ABA 11.7 WS working "correctly" again... At least I can confirm that my Linux recovery USB media is working fine, and that restoring from my FTP vault on my QNAP NAS with ABA 11.7 is working as it should! :-)

Now to download the Win 8.1 ADK and see if I can make the WinPE bootable media.

Hi,

I tracked a little with ProcessMonitor...

It looks like the media builder is sear hing for the wrong GUID... I faked the installation ID, this "opened" the next dialogs, but later the media builder searched for specific SUB components... again with wrong GUIDs...

As there were too many, I gave up here...

Hi guys,

Thank you for the report. We're investigating the problem with WinPE10 and looking for ways to solve it.

I have not tried this yet, but according to this link, you must downgrade the ADK 10 to the version linked because Acronis isn't configured to support the newer versions of ADK 10.  https://kb.acronis.com/content/57455

I tried with the older version 10.0.26624, but still no luck...

waiting for an official fix.....

Volker

Yes I can confirm that the older version did not work for me either.  Sorry.  I tried.  We REALLY need this fixed.
