Acronis Backup RDX Retention

Thread needs solution

Hi, I'm trying to set retention on an USB RDX, but as Acronis explains, I can't. I need retention because we change RDX once a week, so I would have a copy of previous months and weeks, how could I do? I always get the error "Cannot find archive". I have Acronis Backup 12.5. Thanks

Hi,

If you swap RDX drive each week and after swapping the new backups should overwrite the backups already present on the inserted drive, then the proper way would be to _disable_ automatic retention (cleanup) in the backup plan and instead manually delete the existing archives from the new RDX drive after you changed it (since these are supposed to be overwritten any way), so that backup plan could write data onto this drive.

If you want to keep very old backups on the inserted RDX drive then they should be manually moved to some other folder.

Also to keep better tracking of backup files on swappable media it's recommended to set Backup Options->Backup format to version 11, so that each backup is saved into separate file.

P.S. In future versions we're planning to add better handling for swappable media including retention rules handling, but currently it's not something that would work out of the box and manual adjustments are therefore required.

Thank you.

Thank you for the answer.

Now I can't get backup succesful. I formatted the RDX, deleted the job and updated server and agents.

My plan is always complete, saving to an RDX through SMB, the backup finishes and then I get this error. Why?

Hi Igor,

This behavior may occur if the backup location registered in Acronis Management Server has it's meta information outdated (which might happen once after manipulations with the backend RDX device). I'd suggested to have a fresh start:

1) Remove the existing backup location from "Backups" list in web console - this will unregister the location and clear the cache from management server database.

2) Edit the current backup plan and perform direct browsing of this same network share (which uses RDX as backend): "Where to backup"->"Add location"-> "Network folder"

Overall backing up to SMB shares which are placed RDX drives is a normal scenario and can be used, so in your case the problem might be in specifics of particular location record in Acronis Backup management server database, which should be cleared up after above steps.

If the above steps don't help then please contact our support team for further assistance with the issue.

Thank you.
