Agent or ESXi Acronis Virtual Appliance

Thread needs solution

Hi,

What are the benefits of image backup VMs hosted in an ESXi with the Acronis Virtual Appliance versus backing up the VMs with the agent?

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

First of all you can check the following KB article: https://kb.acronis.com/content/16577 - it lists the basic differences between agent-less and agent-based backups.

I can also add that it's practically always better to use agent-less backup wherever applicable since it would also keep hypervisor-specific metadata within the backup image, so during recovery of entire VM all these parameters (VM configuration parameters, custom values, etc.) will be preserved.

Agent-based backup should be used in case there is some storage attached to inside the guest OS of the VM which cannot be captured externally. Examples include: iSCSI LUNs connected inside the guest OS, raw device mapping diskc (RDM disks) in physical compatibility mode, independent-persistent virtual disks.

Thank you.
