Local backup is 3x the size of the server the backup agent is on

Thread needs solution

Hello! I tried looking through google/forum/kbs for a minute and I'm having trouble finding someone who can relate to this. Recently I changed the retention settings for a server and trimmed older backups for it, and everything seemed fine, but it appears to have tripled in its size. I'm not 100% on what details are expected on the forum as it's my first post here, I've been managing Acronis Backup and Replication for a little over a year now and have just started getting into the community support systems.

The agent in question is on an ESXI cluster, and saves to a volume on a SAN. For simplicity I'll round down, but the server is ~200 GB in size and today the cluster job failed due to no free space remaining. I went in and checked, and the usual 200GB server has used 675GB now. I have the retention set to:acronis1_0.JPG

Now, I went and checked the recovery section for this server and it has 10 backups, which only go back a month so at first glance seems like it should be fine. However, if there are more than 1 backup, it doesn't appear to show me the size of each recovery point, nor does it show me this in the backups viewing area (I see it shows me the total size, but I'm wondering if there's a more granular way to see each recovery points size to ensure no extra full backups have taken place)

I checked the local storage destination, no duplicate files, just one large file. I've attached the logs from the latest error to this post, I look forward to hearing back! Let me know if you need more info as I'm sure there are more specific points of interest someone may have to troubleshoot. Thank you!

Hello Ryan,

welcome to Acronis forums! One thought - please note that archive of format 12 will occupy the same space even after clean-up of older backups due to archive architecture. All data is located inside one file and when a certain backup (recovery point) expires due to the retention rules, the outdated backup blocks are marked as “free” ones. Then all newer backups will be written into the “free” blocks first, and only after all the free blocks are filled, the archive file will grow in size again. Please refer to Shrinking archive size of Always Incremental archives for more details.

If you still observe unexpected increase in size, I'd recommend raising a support ticket for investigation.

Thank you,
