Management Server on a Windows 10 Pro

Thread needs solution

Hey there,
end of this year we plan to upgrade our servers from Windows Server 2008R2 to Windows Server 2019.

Currently the managament server is running on an own virtual Server.

As I now saw in the documentation, the management server can also be installed on a Windows 10 Pro machine.
So the idea now is to do this as this would reduce the number of necessary server licenses.

The thing I´m wondering about:
Desktop OS like Windows 10 has a limitation of concurrent network connections.
And as the management server is communicating with the clients I´m not sure if this might be a problem.

So the question is:
Are there any drawbacks, disadvantages or something like that if I install the management server on a Windows 10 virtual machine?

Regards

S.

Hello Sven,

thanks for posting your question on Acronis forums!

So the idea now is to do this as this would reduce the number of necessary server licenses.

You do not need a separate license for Acronis Management Server component since only Acronis Agents (protected systems) require licenses:

All Acronis Backup 12.5 products are licensed per protected system, virtualization host, Office 365 seat or G Suite seat.

Management components (Acronis Management Server, Acronis Storage Node and Acronis Backup Appliance) do not require additional licenses, you only need licenses for machines\hosts you want to perform operations with.

Please read the respective KB article for more details on licensing.

Are there any drawbacks, disadvantages or something like that if I install the management server on a Windows 10 virtual machine?

I have not found any specific issue registered for Acronis Management Server installed on Windows 10 Pro. Thus, I recommend that you test a trial version for your confidence.

Hallo Maria,
well the license reduction affects the number of licenses for Windows Server 2019.
I thought this would be clear as i mentioned it in the sentence before.

Installing a trial version is not very helpful, as for a proper test I would have to install it in the whole infrastructure (approx. 40 machines) to get reliable results.

My concern is Windows 10´s  limit of 20 concurrent incoming network connections or is this no problem in case of the management server?

Hello Sven,

In general, there shouldn't be issues. However, in large environments with many Agents running backups in parallel and constantly reporting their statuses to Acronis Management Server, some glitches may occur e.g. backup progress could be counted incorrectly.
