Recovery the hyper-v entire machine with encryption from a different Acronis backup server.

Dear All,

We just started to use this product, and during planning stage, we face a question as below.

What we are planning to do is schedule entire machine backup for hyper-v virtual servers with encryption option enabled.  And then, later on, we might start to use azure cloud as our offsite backup storage.  Our question is, in case there is a disaster, we would setup an Acronis backup server on the cloud and tried to restore the hyper-v servers on the cloud, is it possible for the hyper-v backups to be recovered from another Acronis Backup server with encryption option enable.

Thanks,

Hello  Jason_jia,

welcome to Acronis forums!

First of all, I should note that you will need a subscription-based license which allows cloud deployment via the web interface.

Please also note that Azure cloud is supported in Acronis Backup 12.5 via Acronis Cyber Infrastructure  (this storage can be configured as a gateway for storing backups in Microsoft Azure) which should be deployed on physical servers.

Another note is that you'll need to install at least one Agent in order to browse cloud storage (this relates to any local or Acronis Cloud Storage, as for Azure cloud, you'll need to download and configure Acronis Cyber Infrastructure).

As for on-premise deployment, please note that Acronis Management Server could be set on any machine, it does need to be your production server. Thus, it could stay safe in case of a disaster with your servers.

I would also recommend that pay attention to Acronis Bootable Media which could be used in case of any disaster: Acronis cloud, any NAS or local storages would be accessible from there.

Dear Maria,

Thanks a lot for your reply.

But I am still wondering that if I enable encryption now for the backups, and the backups are remote located (could be cloud), when the disaster happens, my previous Acronis Management server probably gone with the server room, then I have to setup another Acronis Management server, in this case, can the previous backups with encryption be restored by the newly install Acronis Management server?  The point is the Acronis management server for backup and restore are different server.

Thanks,

Hi Jason.

can the previous backups with encryption be restored by the newly install Acronis Management server?

There should not be any problem with restoring encrypted backups as you will use your encryption password.

What concerns Acronis Management Server, there are two variants:

1) If you use Acronis Management Server on Acronis cloud via web-interface, you simply login to this console, select Acronis Bootable Media (it should be already registered on AMS), boot your failed server from it, select a backup, type in your encryption password and initiate a restore of this server.

2) Otherwise (when you use on-premise Acronis Management Server which failed), you boot your server with a previously created Acronis Bootable Media, browse to a backup location, select a backup, type in your encryption password and initiate a restore.

As for Azure clouds access, I have consulted with experts who advised to access these clouds directly the following way:

\\<account.file.core.windows.net\share>

Thus, I suggest that you download the trial version and test recovering from Azure clouds this way.

I also recommend that you look through the respective chapters regarding recovery in Acronis Backup 12.5 documentation.
