Rotating external usb drive for offsite backup (drive not being targetable)

Thread needs solution

I have Acronis Backup v12.5.8690 running on a windows server 2012 R2.

I have a daily backup that is going to a small nas on the local network. This is running fine, no issues.

I also want to have a weekly full backup going to a local attached USB hard drive that will be rotated out each week for offsite storage. I can't get this backup job to work at all.

I am using https://kb.acronis.com/content/58372 as a guide.

For the daily backup I have select "entire machine". If I select the same thing for the weekly, and try to use the usb disk as the target, I am not given the option to use that external disk.

If I change the backup type to something other than full machine, I am able to use the usb disk as a target.

Is this by design? Maybe using a locally attached disk as a target for a full machine backup can't work since the backup target is also part of what to backup?

That begs the question, does a full machine backup include a locally attached disk in the backup? Maybe I shouldn't be doing a full machine backup for my dailies since the external disk (that will only be used for the weekly backups) would be included in the backup?

Thanks for your responses.

Hello Chris,

welcome to Acronis forum!

As I understand you cannot choose your locally attached USB drive as backup destination. I will be happy to help you.

When you select “entire machine” as backup source, all the detected local storages will be used for backup. To resolve the issue, please switch to „disks and volumes“ view.

I hope this answers your question.
